  • Re: What games are you currently playing?

well, the issue only effects him as the victim, and never his opponents, so it's clearly not his internet OR that the code is just bad. The developers are intentionally pushing a version with sabotaged network handling to Malacite to keep him from overpowering everyone else. It's the only possible answer.

He blames any game with clientside hit detection on bad netcode. It's where a lot of mutual kills come from. Halo, Destiny, Loadout are good examples of this.

Plus just because you have >30ms and a 20MB+ connection doesn't mean you won't suffer from latency. The frequency of TCP acknowledgements plays a major part in this, as does available bandwidth, upload speed and network infrastructure of your property, from the cabinet to your property and from the cabinet to the phone exchange. Seriously, a worn out cable in your house will cause a ton of issues.

Plus it also depends on your ISP and what speeds you are actually getting, that can screw up things as well.

Then you need to look at the hardware you are playing on. As I have pointed out to Mal countless times in his Titan Hard Mode rants, sub 30 frame rates makes dodging shit an exercise in futility with how fast some spells pop out, combine that with latency and you will see why everyone assumed that abilities in that game have already gone off when the cat bar is at 50% if playing on a console or shit PC. Add in latency and you have less time to dodge shit.

Then there is of course player skill. And bad players that blame everything but their own skill. I wish that I screenshot a hilarious rant from a MNK that tried to 1v1 me on my BLM endlessly in Frontlines last night. It basically ended up with me DoT Kiting him until my team turned around and instagibbed him. Bad Solo Heroes that try to play team based games as solo games, then blaming the teammates they refused to stick with on things going badly for them never gets old.

The MNK raged even more when I switched to SCH, a class that is a nightmare to pin down for anything except for a very good DRG or BLM XD

Bad net-code is a problem that doesn't really have a solution. Just smoke and mirrors.

I'm sorry all I can think about is the Square Enix spaghetti code meme that was such a big deal after all the FFXI version updates.

Do people still talk mad shit about them breaking stuff in FFXIV? lol

Finished playing Dragon Age II. I know the recommendation was not to play it, but since Inquisition was delayed, I figured I would take the time to see how the Mage-Templar War was instigated firsthand, rather then get a Wikia account of it. It's more playable than some of the vitriol around the game would suggest. But most of the criticism around the game does turn out to be true- namely, the game feels cheaply made and is unashamed by how shoddy it is.

Going to take the time to also read Dragon Age: Asunder and The Masked Empire.

DA II was just rushed through and through. The developers never had much choice but to talk nice about what a shitty hand EA dealt them, though I am willing to give David Gaider and the writers the benefit of a doubt since they're actually pretty open to discussing their process. Gaider actually keeps a Tumblr page and answers questions all the time.

I know I'm not a God or anything, but I'm also not alone in the netcode bitching. It's been on the forums quite a bit as well as by prolific FPS youtubers like Levelcap reporting the same bullcrap so there's a fair bit of consistency with it by legitimate pros, not just myself. Somebody blows my head off with a sniper rifle and I never saw 'em/didn't react in time that's cool, they got me good job.

I blast a guy point blank with my shotgun, and then 3 seconds later we're both dead that's some netcode bullcrap. Same thing with sniping, it doesn't always happen but it's goddamn frustrating when I get what should be a kill on someone but the f'ing game doesn't register it for several seconds which can lead to a multitude of issues (wasting ammo, target fixation etc.)

I got a number of destiny videos I been wanting to upload, they're all on my FB account or PS4's HDD atm though. I COULD link my montage right now but rather not give my FB info here

All I can say is that I didn't experience any significant amount of lag in the Destiny beta in PvP. It's much more likely that the culprit is your ISP, and not the netcode. As a studio Bungie probably knows more about netcoding for FPS than anyone in the business these days (with maaaybe the exception of Epic Games), so I sincerely doubt they have implemented something so half-assed.

Also consider your location, Mal; just because you're operating on modern technology with the internet, it doesn't let the electronic signals break the laws of physics, so there's always going to be "some" lag time

I'm not trying to be an apologist for Bungie or Destiny here, incidentally. The beta left me wih some misgivings about how sterile the actual game world is. But in terms of complaining about netcode, I didn't really see any of the problems you're describing, and I live in an area that is more or less as geographically isolated as you are in Canada (relative to other, common points on the internet).

Thing is again, I'm not the only one complaining about the weird inconsistencies. Furthermore, mysefl & others have reported on the forums about how we never once - literally not a single instance - had these issues during the Alpha. Granted the Alpha was only about 3 days but I did play a fair chunk of PvP and just destroyed people (I got the footage on my PS4 to back it up ) but since the beta began huge lag issues started cropping up. I'm not sure if it's because of a change in the coding or just stress on Bungie's servers or what but something definitely changed because the PvP was 100% smooth before.

I very rarely saw the same problems come up in PvE but they did creep on me a couple times.

Wildstar is a game I really want to like. The combat is fun, and the classes all do feel unique. The problem is is that the lore and sheer dullness of the quests make it hard for me to really get excited while playing it. Plus there was the whole selling beta access debacle, where the only way to beta test the game was to pre order it, which is just anti consumer as hell. Not even EA dare to pull that shit off.

It is my humble observation that the vast majority of the gaming public know exactly zero about how internet lag works. Just because there are people complaining about it means nothing.

At the very least, Destiny running at 30fps already induces a noticeable amount of input lag that's not seen in games like Call of Duty (closer to 60 fps), so you can toss at least some of those complaints into the "these people are misreading the symptoms and drawing the wrong conclusions" bucket.

Everything else is just smoke and mirrors to cover up the lag over the internet, as DakAttack alludes to above. Sure, there's good always the possibility of there being bad netcode making the problem worse, or just being bad at hiding the lag, but it is always there because you can't make a data packet get from point A to point B any faster than it already is no matter how good your coding wizardry.

All it takes is one player doing something silly like running a bittorrent client in the background to swamp a connection and make everyone lag. It doesn't even always have to be the primary host either.

I'm fairly certain Destiny runs on dedicated servers?

Also it would seem (at least it's my presumption) that the reason for making it 30 fps when PS4 can easily handle 60 is PS3 and PS4 players play together on the same servers, so that would be a rather big problem in PvP otherwise.

Doubtful. Activision's spending a lot on Destiny, but dedicated servers is not in their DNA, and Bungie doesn't have a history of using them either. Besides, as I said above, most people (like yourself) know zilch about how internet lag works. Dedicated servers don't remove internet lag, they only remove host advantage.

I believe this is the case, yes. Coincidentally, this also allows them to cater to the Xbox One's inferior hardware by pushing the resolution up to 1080p (at the cost of 30 fps). It'll be interesting to see if there are any differences at all in the next-gen versions at retail in terms of graphical performance, or if the Xbox One version will have any frame rate problems post-launch. The beta on XB1 was 900p, and 1080p is twice as many pixels, so although the XB1 beta ran at a steady 30fps, it's not a safe assumption that they'll be able to maintain frame rate at all times when they increase the resolution.
