The TESO beta got me back into playing Tera. Makes me worry for TESO really since Tera does everything it does, but a LOT better and is F2P done right. It hides nothing behind a paywall and the bonuses for subscription are attractive enough to tempt you to sub (Bonus Dailies, bonus XP and gold from quests, Xp boosters that recharge daily, free fast mount), but are things you can play without.

The combat system in Tera is awesome and makes melee classes very fun to play because of all of the movement and action oriented combat. It's probably the closest thing you will ever get to an actual Sword Art Online MMO (it actually kind of makes me wish for a version of it on the Occulus Rift) as well. I dislike the aesthetic of armour and weapons in Korean MMOs, and the music tends to be pretty generic and limited, but I can look past that due to the sheer fun factor of the combat system.

This just reinforces my belief that ESO is destined to out-do FFXIV in the category of Spectacular Trainwrecks. Tera is garbage so if it's doing things better than ESO...well I've got this nice shallow grave already dug and waiting.

In completely unrelated news: I've installed Skyrim again because I needed a game where I could find some solitude to lose myself in.

That is the other problem with TESO. It makes me want to just play Skyrim. Most of the fanbase just wanted what is basically Skyrim with co-op, basically something that feels like Borderlands or Diablo. What we got was basically an open world clone of Neverwinter with a $15/month subscription.

Don't get the wrong, the PvP is fantastic, but if you hate PvP then avoid TESO like the plague because that is all the game does that isn't done better elsewhere, and even then GW2 gives a bigger variety of PvP content for free.

Seems there's a Pathfinder MMO in the works for 2015, so that should be something to watch for. I wouldn't bother with ESO, game looks like utter shit and I've yet to come across a single honest positive review. The new EQ isn't looking so hot either.


Destiny may as well be Borderlands: The MMO really, minus the cell shading and crazy humor that is and I for one can not freaking wait to play that. There's also Project Titan which is currently set for 2015, and I'm sure Blizzard's gonna unveil it either at E3 or Blizzcon (my money's on an E3 teaser, with the real meat coming at Blizzcon). I still think ARR is turning back into a trainwreck sadly, though at a much slower pace than originally and it saddens me greatly. The forum's been abuzz for weeks now with people who are upset with the direction of the game, and to YP's credit he *is* listening but it remains to be seen where the game goes. They flat out said that dungeon drops are going to remain better than crafted & melded gear, which to me is just 1 giant "fuck you" and begs the question of why the fuck is Materia still in the game then but whatever...


Maybe EA will actually smarten up, get their shit together and put together a decent Mass Effect MMO - I'd love to roll a Turian or Geth ^_^


If BF4 wasn't such a goddamned mess I would LOVE to see them attempt something akin to MAG, but the Frostbite engine and multiple countries/organizations (I really liked that MoH for example let me be JTF2 that was f'ing epic. Guess you'd be SAS then wouldn't you Fire?)

Play SWTOR and roll either a Republic Trooper or Imperial Agent. It's pretty much as close to a Mass Effect MMO as we're going to get.

I dunno, when they were asked about it they said they had no plans yet but weren't ruling it out either.

My guess is it'll be some time after ME4.

Titanfall's a lot better than I was expecting. I set the bar pretty low because it was the MW2 guys lol, but actually it's pretty good. I LOVE the parkour!

My only gripes so far are the low player count (6v6), it's a little hard to distinguish players from NPCs just by looking at them (you don't really know until they're targeted for a second or so) and the Smart Pistol is pretty OP - you just aim it at people for a second or 2 and it automatically locks on for an instant kill...

Killing other players is already easy. The pistol doesn't change anything.

hahah, speaking of which I keep forgetting to log in for my free battlepacks, and you get silvers on the weekends.

The new DLC actually does look good, but I'm still reluctant to buy premium. Maybe once they offer the whole thing for a discount, but by then I'll probably be busy with destiny and won't care. Damn EA for taking M$ dirty money, I want Titanfall on my PS4 now >_<

Been playing Lightning Returns after getting it this weekend and getting to sit down and play it over the last 4 days. So far it is basically Shin Megami Tensei with the battle system from "Tales of...". There's a lot of customisation and the game seems pretty non-linear. You can do the story quests in pretty much any order you want to and there's a hell of a lot of sidequests to keep you occupied. You can functionally build your own jobs and can pick 3 of them to switch to on the fly in battle.

I'm actually liking the battle system so far. It is surprisingly deep when you look at how abilities interact with each other and it is pretty interesting to learn the attack patterns of the mobs and bosses. It is fairly challenging as well but isn't really brutal. If you learn the battle system and act sensibly then it's pretty fun. If you just hold down attack then you will wind up staring at the game over screen pretty fast. The times I have died it was due to me not blocking or dodging that attack in time, or I put myself at melee range at the wrong time and got clobbered for it. My only real complaint about it is that the Stagger mechanic is still way too important and you do get that feeling of plinking away at an enemy for scratch damage before it exploded in a single combo because it suddenly fell over.. There is also no subtargetting which drives me nuts sometimes in fights with huge numbers of monsters. Especially in those fights where you are playing "Find the Black Mage before it murders you".

The writing and character development has been improved over XIII and XIII-2. While XIII-2 actually wasn't that bad in that department, XIII's main issue was that the did nothing to explain who these characters are, what they are doing or why we should care until about 10-12 hours into the game. Also Lightning's VA basically is trying to sound like FemShep so that is a personal plus for me.

The main big negative about the game is that it's an action game running at 30FPS. Fuck off with that. The screen I play console games on is a big ass PC monitor that is more than capable of displaying 120FPS so why the fuck can't I play the game at that framerate? ARR runs flawlessly at 120FPS, yet Lightning Returns is locked at 30 for some idiotic reason, and oh dear god it shows when a lot of stuff is going on onscreen. The slowdown can be crippling in some of the more hectic boss fights. The tearing and jittering that comes from a 30FPS lock can also be pretty distracting.

First impressions are overall positive. It's not the best FF game out there for sure, but it's hardly the worst. If you want to see how the whole arc wraps up then grab it, you won't be disappointed. SMT fans should actually look into it because thematically, the game is a lot like the Shin Megami Tensei main series. Fans of "Tales of" or Valkyrie Profile will also like the game for the combat system being cloned directly from them.

EDIT: Might as well add this: doing Parkour in a Ballgown or in a Miqo'te outfit (complete with cat ears and tail) never gets old and is one of those things that always makes me chuckle.

My God, what a beast Bravely Default is. I'm 70 hours in and I don't feel like I'm close to finishing (based on general feeling from the story). To think 48 hours is long for a JRPG...
