Starting up SMT IV and making my way through the early dungeons now. So far this has some of the slickest presentation I've seen on the 3DS and that's saying a bit since Nintendo's offerings are commonly solid and Etrian Odyssey IV was no slouch visually, either. The dungeons look excellent in 3D, though triggering combat the way Persona 3 and 4 does is taking some getting used to.
Everything else plays to expectations, though. Combat is just as fast and the initial challenge is as steep as one would expect from an SMT game.
I also can't get tired of hearing the Burroughs AI speak. They got Ali Hillis (Liara T'soni, Lightning) to do her and she's like of like a soothing in-between of those two characters, but with a synthetic voice effect.
The difficulty and AI is back up to DW3 standards which is a little depressing given how easy 4-7 were and how changing difficulty would only change how much defence you had and not how aggressive the AI is. In 8 the AI WILL actively punish you for charging in blindly and making mistakes like it would in 3. There is a revamped elemental system too where the AI will actively avoid you if your element is strong against theirs and in turn will turn much more aggressive if it is yours that is weak.
Everyone has a unique moveset now. While you can equip any weapon, everyone has one unique moveset tied to thier EX weapon so basically each and every character will feel different now. There's also no more being forces not to use your EX weapon because the moveset sucks too, everyone gets at least one effective moveset now from thier EX weapon. So that means Sun Shangxiang finally doesn't suck now.
Plus the story mode was revamped to branch out like in Warriors Orochi. Hitting or failing certain objectives will affect other battles and will sometimes enlock different stages entirely depending on if you did something that basically "breaks history", such as saving someone who both historically and in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, died in that battle, well if you save them then they pop up in other stages.
If also produces "What if?" scenarios. Like what if the Fire Attack at Chibi failed? Which also have an effect on the storyline.
Oh and there's a lot of costumes too, some of which have really like touched. Like Xiahou Dun not wearing his eyepatch until after her loses it at the Battle of Xu.
They also added in online leaderboards and Co-Op, the latter of which is a LOT of fun. It reminds me of my childhood days playing Golden Axe or Streets of Rage with my eldest sister, it's great to finally get some decent online support for the game for once.
And yes they buffed Lu Bu back to DW3 levels. So basically if you aren't maxed out he WILL two shot you in Normal, nevermind anything higher.
The 360 version is apparently a shoddy port though, and there are reports of terrible framerates. The PS3 version is fine and only runs into framerate issues if there are literally hundred of guys on the screen while things are on fire and exploding around you.
But yeah there's a very good reason why the game is getting the reviews it if. Simply put it's the best in the series, tops 3 without a doubt and most importantly, is one of those games you can tell the devs listened to the players and made it fun.
Wind immunity might be worth investing in for some fights in SMT IV - particularly bosses. Turns out Garu (wind) skills this time out will randomly toss demons out of your party and somewhere off in the distance where you can't resummon them right away. They'll find their way back to you in time through field encounters, though.
Got my black Demonica suit and I'm heading to Shinjuku now.
That's the Demonica armor from SMT Strange Journey's art. I couldn't find a pic of the in-game version yet, but it looks great and kinda makes me hope they remake SJ with SMT IV's assets on 3DS. SMT IV actually improved on a number of SJ's ideas in such a way I wish there were in SJ.
All the retailer-themed armor is a bit of a joke. The Gamestop and Amazon armors both look cool but they really blow statwise. The Amazon one does sort of make you look like a hobo because it looks like it was made from their shipping boxes. It makes Flynn look like the coolest samurai hobo in the post-apocalypse.

My friend got me Little Inferno. It's a brilliantly simple game. The goal is to set things on fire, which produce coins so you can buy more things to stick in the fireplace and ignite.
There's a pretty minimalist storyline running in the background, but it provides a lot of charm and atmosphere to the catharsis of lighting absolutely everything on fire.
I would recommend it if you've got 3 hours and a couple dollars to burn.
