  • Re: What games are you currently playing?

    Getting into Alpha Protocol.

It's a bit rough going at first, as the game's slightly buggy and doesn't do the best job of explaining things right off the bat but once you get the hang of it it's easy enough. It's like if MGS & ME had an illegitimate son.

Would love to see SEGA & Obsidian do a proper sequel, as I feel like they were on to a lot of good ideas with this game, but just needed some better execution and a bigger budget.

For a limited time only (that is, the entire month of April).

If you play GW2 already, I highly recommend logging in even once, at least long enough to get to the character select screen.

Mighty Switch Force HD. I'm surprised at the amount of depth they've squeezed out of a simple game mechanic like toggling blocks.

Still working my way through Bioshock Infinite (PS3). Still love the game but the combat... not so much. Dreading finishing this Hard difficulty run and moving on to 1999 mode.

DJ Max Teknika Tune (Vita) is kicking my butt right now. It's like playing drums with your fingers. Not impossible, but takes a lot of mental gymnastics to get used to, and I don't know if I want to spend the time to do it.

Pandora's Tower (Wii) is on tap in a couple of weeks, and then Soul Sacrifice (Vita) at the end of the month.

In the mean time I still have a ton of backlog to get through (Mass Effect 1, MGS HD Collection, Metal Gear Rising, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, and probably another half dozen games I've forgotten about).

1000/1000 Gamerscore now on Alpha Protocol. Very sad that it won't see a sequel, as I saw on the wiki entry SEGA put out a statement that it just didn't sell well enough to merit one, even though it tried a lot of cool concepts (and most of it was done well too).

Surprising too given Obsidian has a (mostly) good track record. Especially with PS4/Newbox coming, they could have made the next one look much more polished and hopefully fixed some of the crappy gameplay which was no doubt responsible for the horrid reviews the game got. Bah, this is why we don't see lot of new IPs - someone comes up with a good idea, and maybe it isn't perfect, but they still put it out there and then the critics shit all over it and sales drop and so companies go back to shitting out more sequels of existing franchises until we're sick of them.

So yah, fuck you Destructoid, 2/10 my ass. The game's a solid 6.5~7

Playing through The Walking Dead (Telltale, not that piece of manure by Activision). Amazing storytelling.

David Cage can get bent if he thinks more polygons produce more emotions. He needs to play this game.

He has something of a point, in so far as better graphics can help with immersion.

But ultimately, it's the story that matters - you can put a nice shiny ribbon on a turd, but in the end it's still a turd.

Immersion doesn't equal emotion, especially not in the way David Cage produces his games.

Heavy Rain is many things, but at the top of the list is its inability to cross the uncanny valley, and that's not something that more polygons can fix (yet).

I disagree. I think far better graphics just send us straight to the uncanny valley at which point the immersion gets broken. Give me something stylized and I can lose myself in it no problem. It's like how we all could find ourselves enthralled by saturday morning cartoons despite the fact that they weren't live action performances.

Only in the hands of people that would've done a good job with immersion even without them. You're also assuming that the goal is to reproduce reality - which is all well and good, but I tend to find stylized art more interesting to look at (e.g. TF2 vs Battlefield)

I know people loved this game, but I could never figure out why. The story is slow and predictable. The characters are almost all shallow and throw-away. The game-play is a mangled abomination; I would have been content with an interactive movie. I could never force myself to complete the whole thing.

A big part of it is how interactive the game is.
