  • Re: What games are you currently playing?

I'm about ready to commit suicide (no not really but gawd damn) from playing Onimusha 3.

FOR THE LOVE OF FUCK ISSEN IS HARD!

I just can not beat any of the Critical Training sessions. The defensive Issen I can do, just quick block then attack but the regular (or "true issen" as ppl call it) is just too much BS/luck. I've tried attacking just prior to the attack (usually fails) and just as the enemy starts up the final attack motion (which almost always ends up in just a normal swing) and I've f'ing had it.

Does anyone else own these games? I really want that Black Vest for Aiko (need to get all 8 for the real ending) but that requires beating the Critical training... - _ -'

        INNNNNNNNNNNFAMOUS

Barring the initial outrage that I couldn't un-invert the look axis, the game is pretty solid. Once you're beyond the intro you can pause the game and change a few of the controls in the options.

It's extremely easy to be good or bad, there's nothing you really do differently besides making key decisions when prompted. I'm playing as a good guy my first pass through and I can pretty much carpet bomb the streets when I need to with limited repercussions.

I'm playing on hard, and the enemies pretty much always see you first and have extremely accurate aim. Most of the time your only defense is your basic attack which has extremely long range and can instantly kill with a head shot. It's pretty much like a rifle. Later on in the game you gain the ability to zoom in on your targets, making it more like a sniper rifle. Enemies usually have assault rifles, while some have shotguns, and others use explosives. The explosives are close to one-hit killers, so they need to be dodged or redirected.

Hand to hand combat is pretty much a no-no, which is the biggest disappointment. Fists lose to guns, who knew?

Your goal is to figure out what happened before everything went kaboom. Your side-goals include reclaiming the city from the gangs, obtaining glowing blue shards scattered across the city, and locating recordings hidden in defunct satellite dishes.

The game feels like a cross between Assassin's Creed and Crackdown. It's not bad, but being good is lame.

Internet was out for a few days so I went ahead and finished Castlevania: Lament of Innocence.

I still don't see why people knock this game and Curse of Darkness. They aren't epic, but they are certainly pretty damn good still. I'd say the only glaring problem with LoI is that it is pretty short, I think I finished it with around 7 hours played.

This leaves me with only 2 or 3 games in the series that I haven't finished. I tried to play them all in chronological order one summer, but I got burned out just before starting Circle of the Moon.

The problem with LoI is that they hubbed it. Castlevania has been played up as a large interconnected area and when you have a series that followed in the footsteps of what Super Metroid accomplished and picked up that torch with SotN onward, its very much a letdown to see the series trying to ape Devil May Cry when Metroid Prime came around and has proven this type of game can not only rise from the 2D realm, it can do it with its core values intact.

If they're not going to go the way of SotN in the 3D design, then I rather they approach the series as they have with Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia and stick to 2D. They took what they learned from the Metroid style of action, but went back to a style that's closer to Simon's Quest than Metroid-scale exploration.

Lament tried to be Devil May Cry, minus the hardcore action and complex movesets. The environments were also bland and repetitive. Lots of boring hallways. It fail to create the mood of even the NES original.

And the story was a horrible retcon. Leon was not the first Belmont, Sonia Belmont was. Not that I grade Castlevania much on story, but still, when you don't have much to work with from the start, its weak to go back and change things.

Might as well let everyone know what I'm playing right now:

Pokemon Platinum - Having a lot of fun with this version especially now they have added an extra 60 Pokemon to the Sinnoh Dex. There is now actually a choice as to which fire type you can use before unlocking the National Dex. Before you are forced to use either Infernape which made the entire game too easy or Rapidash who only has one fire type attack and it sucked anyway. Now there are a lot more fire types to use which is a big plus considering how useful they are in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum.

Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce - Not too sure about single player but multiplayer is still a lot of fun especially when you and a bunch of friends get to team up against Lu Bu in a huge Dragonball esque flight hundred of feet in the air.

Rock Band 2 - I love how the world tour mode is now the career mode so you can actually do it as a solo artist. Multiplayer is a lot more fun as overdrive will pull band members out of the red instead of just you. Could someone please tell me when the RB2 instruments are coming out in the UK if at all? I've only ever been able to find them on Amazon but they won't ship Rock Band 2 instruments to the UK.
              Rahal Gerrant - Balmung - 188 DRK
              Reiko Takahashi
              - Balmung - 182 AST, 191 BLM, 182 SCH, 188 SMN

Dragon Quest VIII, slowly but surely finishing it as I decide from day to day whether to bring my DS for the train ride home or not. Wish they had made it a little more like VIII though where you could see all the characters in battle, much like they did with Monsters: Joker. The whole first-person view thing of all the earlier games never really did it for me.

Went back to beat need for speed most wanted. Having trouble actually playing the story of the game because I love running from the police lol.

                  @Malacite
Those were stupidly hard to do training sessions since the timing was changed drastically from onimusha 2, but I think I learned how to do it during demon realm runs, because the game forces you to do it or kills you. When you can do it consistently though you feel so epic.

I'll be playing Damnation at some point or another with a friend, but it looks like Tomb Raider. The developers are claiming they're putting a new twist on deathmatch, but being spawnkilled and generally not knowing where you're being shot from isn't anything new.

inFamous would make a better co-op game than Damnation. A lot of the decision making would have to be changed, but overall it could work pretty well. It'd definitely make the zerg aspect a lot more bearable, as weak as it is. So far only a single enemy has the ability to mix things up, while every other enemy attempts the zerg.

That's an understatement. I had a hard time with it in Onimusha 1 and 2 but I would still tend to get lucky now and then. In 3 it really has just been sheer blind lucky if and when it's happened. Most games I've played give you at least a full second window to react which is long enough. I've learned when to do it for some enemies but I'm just physically incapable of reacting quickly enough. In general the timing is just far too late into the final attack animation and it's really, really finicky about being too early or too late I HATE IT.

Replaying through Vesperia on Hard/Unknown with Expx10 (unknown for normal mobs, hard for bosses) trying to get all the secret missions in one play through. I'm such a title whore for "Tales of" games. Just got Yeager's after way too many tries. Found a much easier way to do it and proceeded to Jud-thud myself after getting it in 1 try.

Oh yeah and Banjo-Tooie and XI as well.
