  • Re: What games are you currently playing?

Watched the recent dev interviews about Halo 4 and Black Ops 2, both looking promising (Halo 4 much more so but it does look like BO2 might finally break the downward spiral into mediocrity that's been plaguing CoD) and I can't f'ing wait to sink my teeth into Halo 4's campaign & spartan ops.

I'm tired of CoD. The franchise itself is fine. But the storyline's are boring. They're now introducing a zombie campaign and it makes me feel like they're doing Valve's Job of a bootleg Left 4 Dead 3. Only by Treyarch (unless they're not doing BO2.)

Honestly, I would like to see them release a game with no campaign for once. Just focus EVERYTHING on the MP because let's face it, it's only a small minority that even gives 2 shits about their mediocre campaigns. BO2 *could* change that, since they are putting in quite a bit of effort (even multiple endings and outcomes for each mission - team mates can actually die off during missions) but it remains to be seen. It's likely still to be just more michael bay crap.

If I want a silly, over-the-top nonsensical FPS campaign I'll stick with Battlefeld: Bad Company. At least in that series I know it's being done on purpose.

Yeah, the big publishers of the industry like to crow about things that aren't true.

2k goes on about the importance of photorealism and Gearbox is all "lolWUT" and makes Borderlands.
They say single player is dead and Skyrim has probably sold over 10 million copies by now
Big publishers still insist they'e the only real path to success, the indie scene and Kickstarter suggest otherwise.

My consumption is still largely singleplayer and the SP content out there is very steady. I don't really need a study to prove it, but its a nice thought that someone looked into it.

What I'm tired of is the needless push of multplayer into games where they do not belong. People can bitch all they want about Skyrim or Dragon's Dogma not having co-op and they can kindly go fuck themselves because those games do not need it. Multiplayer is like Homer Simpson's "monkeys make everything better" mentality. Multiplayer has a place in certain genres, but it has ruined games like Resident Evil and now Dead Space because "people don't like playing scary games alone" or so we're told. It didn't belong in Bioshock 2 or Metroid Prime 2. Metroid Prime Hunters was terrible.

And I don't wnt facebook shit in my game. SE's really starting to get on my nerves with it. First LR:FFXIII has it and hey, fine, I'm not going to fucking play it anyway. But now they're putting it in Bravely Default for 3DS so you can unlock gear or post your progress - fuck that shit. I don't want to see people posting pet pictures on Facebook, much less what just happened in their video games.

If you want to talk about what games you're playing, go to a forum or write a blog because no one on facebook cares.

It's funny you should bring that up, because just recently the developers of Metro: Last Light decided to axe the multiplayer for now and instead focus solely on the single player. They're considering bringing in MP post-launch as they did put a fair amount of work into it, but they don't want it to affect the campaign.

It'd be nice to see more developers take a stance like this, not sacrificing the quality of the game just to cater to a crowd. I mean really, EA & Valve have both gone on record now saying all their games will feature some kind of multi-player aspect to them. The new C&C Generals 2 went right off my list the moment Bioware said they won't be doing any SP for that game whatsoever - it's strictly MP. I mean wtf, a C&C game with no campaign? I didn't think it was possible to fail any harder than C&C4 but.... and really, the campaigns in generals & zero hour were actually pretty damned good.

Valve tends to provide worthwhile SP campaigns where applicable. I don't worry about where they stand.

EA can do what they want, all they're doing is making other bloated third parties look good.

                      • Re: What games are you currently playing?

Escort missions are the bane of my existence. The thin men on them are freaking sharpshooters and I keep running into bugs. For example, yesterday I got the mission where you have to escort Thorne. Second turn a thin man drops on one of the buildings I'm in. The next round he clips through the ceiling, instantly flanking me, and proceeds to start raining death on me while hovering in the air. Screenshot: Steam Community :: Screenshot Meanwhile in the room next door, Thorne is getting ambushed and my escorts need support, but I have to spend 3 actions gunning down this joker so he doesn't single-handedly wipe my squad. Naturally, Thorne dies and I fail the mission.

This morning I got the mission where you have to escort the scientist. A thin man spawns behind my position, so I get all my guys in position behind high cover on overwatch expecting him to run in on the next turn. He does, all four reaction shots miss, he moves absurdly far to flank my far left guy and one-shot him. This mission I actually managed to pull out with the three soldiers I had left, but the bullshit level at the start was extreme.

Just now I got the mission where you have to find and extract Anna Sing. I didn't recognize how little high cover is on that map when I was playing on normal. Anyway, I run into that first thin man who is always there, and run my first support guy up to cover to start suppressing him so I can flank. This POS stands up, and with a -50 penalty to accuracy between cover and suppression not only hits, but crits my best support guy, killing him. So I spread out a bit and try to recover, putting my other support behind the bus on the right to overwatch that flank, and because it's some of the only high cover on the map. Another thin man hits and one-shots her against the -40 high cover penalty. So at this point I'm severely outnumbered and flanked on both sides. I manage to take out all hostiles, but not before losing two more squad members, including the last of only two assault squaddies I've managed to roll the entire game. So I got up to Sing thinking I can salvage this disaster ... and she doesn't respond when I approach. I reload the game twice but I can't get the objective to complete, so I just have to say screw her and abort the mission.

I think I'm done playing Ironman until some patches go in. I'm fine being held accountable for my screw-ups, and I'll tolerate a certain amount of BS from the RNG, but when the game itself is conspiring against me with bugs and glitches, that just tears it.

                        ----------

On a happier note, this playthough I have 8 sats up at the end of May, with no countries lost yet. Captured my first muton and working on plasma weaponry. That'll be great when it goes in since I never got a sectoid or the laser weaponry it gives you a bonus towards.

                        ----------

ARGH and just after I posted that positive note, I ran into an abduction mission with 8 mutons and a cyberdisc, which I was completely unprepared to deal with using my puny standard-issue earth weapons. If that's what I can expect from encounters in June, then I think this playthough is lost.

Got Dishonored and also traded in my Wii and some games today to get that and put some extra money down on the Wii U. I was going to hold out on trading the Wii in, but half of the games I downloaded for it are on my 3DS in some form and the other half weren't too memorable, I wasn't really losing anything. Well, maybe Dracula X, but I'm not much for classic Castlevania.

Sadly The Last Story just didn't grab me like I had hoped, either. I think some of the EU players were right - I should have waited to play TLS first because Xenoblade wouldn't have left my expectations so high otherwise. TLS had some neat ideas, but I just couldn't get into most of it.

I'm halfway through June on my Impossible playthrough and yes, that's not unheard of. I just cleared the invasion mission on the enemy base and captured the enemy commander, but took a lot of reloads to find an approach where someone in my squad wouldn't get their brains plastered on the wall. 2 cyberdisks, 1 commander, 6 chryssalids on that map. Yuck.

The only unusual weapons I'm using so far are a couple of light plasma rifles. Haven't had time to research the others yet.

Sounds like one of my bad Shogun campaigns. XD

But from the sound of it X-COM is nowhere near as forgiving as Shogun is.
