Tried classic last night and it's def. no joke; first 'start' mission, I lost everyone on my first try. Second time, made it through with everyone but one. I don't even want to see the pain of impossible.

XCOM stuff

That achievement is for an abductions mission, not an escort one. So it's just kill all the guys. Still, probably not possible without dangerously aggressive scouting and rockets/grenades to destroy cover and save time flanking.

I'm playing on Normal as well, but Ironmode. I'm on my 3rd attempt. On my first try I flubber the tactics hard on the mission that Outsider capture leads to, and TPKed my 6 best guys. I probably could have salvaged it in retrospect, but I just couldn't handle it psychologically. Second try my tactics were much better, but I wasn't happy with how I'd managed the strategy layer. FYI, prioritize satellites above everything and don't bother with a second laboratory. This game I'm feeling pretty solid and I'll probably finally complete the campaign, but I'd want to run through again on Normal before I felt ready for Classic.

Man, this game ... I feel nervous when I'm on missions. Every move feels so critical. One misstep could lead to one of my favorite guys eating dirt, and a mission failure is something I'll have to play around for the rest of the game. And you literally cannot get ahead without taking some of those risks. I hold my breath every time I pull out that arc thrower.

That said, nothing makes you feel more awesome than getting yourself in a bad situation and digging your way out. Earlier today I had a guy take three steps forward into a building and aggro seven guys at once. I lost a Major level sniper right off the bat, and I had two more Majors on the ground bleeding out before the battle was over, but I pulled it out and cleared the mission with only one casualty. I felt like a champion.

Such an great game.

The more people talk about this, the more it's starting to sound like Winback on the PS2. Old good game. Not sure if anyone has played it.

That's what I'm trying to understand. I never played the original either, but I do understand that the original and the game released this week are strategy games. The other game that was planned was going to be the usual "modernized" FPS horseshit developers force onto older IPs these days.

Hm, it is? Ok, so that's not SO bad if you can get an Easy abduction mission.

I'm playing on Normal as well, but Ironmode.

I abandoned my Normal playthrough at 19 hours and have switched to Classic. Classic is horrendously scary. A single mistake will cause one of your guys to take a critical hit and instantly get killed. It seems to me that enemies have a base chance to crit on Classic of somewhere between 33-50%, because I almost always regret making aggressive positioning moves.

My tactics revolve around having a Heavy in the front with Bullet Swarm and Holo-Targeting. I keep him in full cover, Hunkered Down to maximize defense, then back him up with 2 snipers. If an enemy pops their head out, I fire on them once with the heavy (to trigger Holo-Targeting's +10% chance to hit for everyone else), and still have an action to get him Hunkered Down, then pick off the enemy with my snipers.

This is a really, really good spiritual remake of the original. The mechanics are different (much more streamlined), and more elegant, but the feel and difficulty is definitely in almost exactly the same spot.

I forgot about that, actually. The Wii ending was cute.

OK, then. I might check that out. Gonna have to see what my situation is with the Wii U first, but once that's sorted out I'll probably get this and Dishonored as soon as I can. It was nice to see a streak of releases this week that didn't compromise themselves for the sake of being "modern."

Finished Torchlight 2. I was a little disappointed with the story on this one, but the gameplay was solid for the most part. Prismatic Bolts is fucking hax so pretty much every boss fight was a joke. Eventually I'll take up a new character and run through without a bullshit OP character, but for now I'm pretty burned out.

It's been a while since I had that buzz that comes with finishing a game. It's like getting reacquainted with an old friend.

Got the Wet Work trophy for clearing a Very Difficult abduction in X-Com on Classic/Impossible in 5 turns. Got lucky and had a map spawn in China with a tiny, tiny, tiny map. Grenades and rocket launcher took care of the rest of the problem. I think there were 12 enemies on the map.

Now to figure out how to beat the game on Impossible... I've gotten 3 missions in with no fatalities so far, but no idea how much longer I can keep it up before I start losing troops.

Sony Wants To Make a PS3 Controller That Gets Hot Or Cold



I think the only worthwhile addition is the controller detecting heat and cooling the controller to cool your hands, but even that's not a terribly needed addtion. It just sounds like another Sony department trying to weasel in some tech from R&D. Its just a patent, though I'm still wondering what purpose Move serves.

It's a cool idea but it's pretty obvious they're doing it just to sit on the patent. Technology like this has a ton of potential uses such as physiotherapy or aiding the blind or partially sighted. For gaming? I'm not 100% sure how it would be used though things like overheating weapons or item searches could be interesting I suppose?
