  • Re: What games are you currently playing?

Apart from resubbing to FFXI, I'm currently still playing Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten. I finished the main storyline and purchased most of the good DLC characters from the PS Store. This weekend I'll be pitting my team against that of Mhurron's.

    The war... it's on.

Yeah I'm holding off until a bit later and even then I'm only resubbing for 1 month purely to snag the achievements off XBL lol.

Still playing Kid Icarus: Uprising. When I get into a game, I really get into a game. Doesn't hurt that, every so often, dialogue I never heard before still occasionally pops up. And the promise of being able to fuse a new cool weapon is just too enticing.

I've managed to beat about 4 or 5 chapters at 9.0 difficulty now. Having some success with this baby:

        Violet Palm
        Ranged: *****
        Melee: ***
        Value: 299

        Evasion+3
        Backward-dash ch. shot+1
        Dash cont. fire+2
        Knockback recovery+1
        Heart bonus+1

Do pretty good with this in multiplayer too. I can plow through about 2 or 3 people with this before I get killed myself. The Evasion and Dash Cont Fire compliment each other pretty well. Problem is I can't kill very fast either. And I still have yet to find a way to deal with claw users. I think Claws are the most formidable weapons in online play.

My goal is to create a good Cutter Palm. Mostly because I like the idea of it, firing magical sawblades and all. My ideal would be (in order of priority) Forward Dash Charge Shot, Evasion, Stamina, Standing Cont Fire, Shot Homing, Speed.

After much deliberation, I have decided I don't like the Legion or the NCR. I have received the power of the light of judgement, so I will destroy everything and build my very own empire of death (and greed) in New Vegas. Caesar is down so now for the head of the NCR.

Fun game so far, although I gotta say the Max references have been my favorite part so far.

Playing through the Thieves Guild quests in Skyrim. So far I'm loving it. I got a little trigger happy with burning beehives... so I forfeited my share... but SCREW IT! I HATE BEES!!!

Super Meat Boy has been kicking my ass this weekend.

I was doing well enough in the first world. Acing all the normal levels, finishing all the dark world levels, snagging most of the bandages.

Now I'm in the second world, not acing all of the normal levels(though I did complete them all), getting curb-stomped in the dark world levels, missing most of the bandages and the boss feels like I'm fighting Dopefish if it could move fast. I'm starting to see where the difficulty curve of this game is headed and I'm fairly certain I won't be able to make it all the way to the end.

                        This game is hard.

Finished my platinum trophy on Dragon's Dogma.

Now playing through Gravity Rush on PS Vita and Lollipop Chainsaw on PS3.

Lollipop Chainsaw... I don't think I can finish this game. The combat feels unpolished, with weird hitboxes, slogging through lots of yawn-zombies, and never much sense of control when there's more than 1 enemy on-screen at a time. Boss fights are good, but wading through the hordes of zombies is monotonous and unexciting in any way. Upgrades don't make you feel much stronger, and ye gods load screens galore.

Sad but true: I'm actually enjoying my free time with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine from PlayStation+ than I am my $60 purchase of Lollipop Chainsaw. And WH40K:SM isn't a very good game.

Feel totally the opposite about LC. The combat really opens up once you've unlocked and understand the properties of Juliet's move list. I would not say it was as tight as DMC or Bayonetta but I wouldn't say it was as glitchy as Castlevania LoS. The evasion element is about as strong as the former titles. To max out sparkle hunting you really need to prioritize moves with a wide reach more than line attacks or simply stunning enemies and trying to line them up. Stuns are really just a starting point for the game.

The games weak points are the dodgy chainsaw blaster minigame and QTEs that result in game overs if you fail them. Though I partially blame the 360 controller for making QTEs a mindfuck by having to be different from Nintendo's Y,X/A,B layout. I've had to ignore the letters and just memorize color, so it's a good thing I'm not colorblind. This is where Sony nailed it - they went with shapes and not letters. That difference was what made it easy to learn and remember thier buttons.

That aside, the game never reaches the sort of infuriating encounter that Jasper Bat was in NMH2. There are no bullshit bosses, just bullshit QTEs. But then, that's all QTEs ever have been. I only ever liked them in NMH because they were physically involved and it gave the events an edge for it. I get nothing out of arbitrary button presses.

That aside, it's time for me to enter a land of Pokemon and warriors.

No, it's really not. Juliet's jump/leap-over move has no invincibility frames at all, and her pom-pom attacks have such low range that enemies can wind up attacks from outside her attack radius and still hit her mid-combo.

Her jump-kick move is probably the only one in her basic repertoire that's actually "good", and it's only vaguely safe even on a successful hit.

Combat doesn't have the flow of Batman: Arkham Asylum, nor does it reward you for solid evasion in the way Bayonetta does. The only real saving grace of the combat system is the lock-on button so you can at least focus your efforts in the right general direction, but aside from that? The combat feels awkward and terrible in crowds. There are very few cues to tell you enemies are winding up an attack, especially when there can be a significant number in play at a time. There are no cues at ALL to tell you how close a given zombie is to becoming stunned - the stars just appear on their own after you hit them for a while. I can see why there are some comparisons to Dynasty Warriors in the reviews, because that really is a bit like how the rank-and-file zombies work. You just sort of wade through them and hope for the best, instead of strategizing how to pick their formation apart because there are virtually no "safe" moves when more than one enemy is in play.

You know it's sad when I'm enjoying the combat in Warhammer 40K more than Lollipop Chainsaw. >___>
