I only played a bit of the remake, but it seems like they expanded the story an updated parts to be more in-line with what came later on GBA, GC and Wii. I also had a NESter DC ROM with a fan translation from way back. The difference was rather huge between the original and the DS version.

Nintendo releasing retail games on 3DS eShop, starting with New Super Mario Bros. 2 | Joystiq

Wii U retail games will be sold digitally at launch | Joystiq

NIntendo's new digital strategy isn't without its quirks, but its a nice compromise for retail and those that want the option of digital purchases at retail without having to run a credit card online at home. The way Nintendo's been selling Pushmo, Super Mario Land 2 and 3D Classics Kid Icarus through Gamestop has been somewhat of an experiment. I did use some of my remaining Power-Up rewards points on SML3 just because I could as an option. If you have a smartphone you can even present the coupon to them that way through the Gamestop app.

But the option to sell digital does give retailers the ability to put that content on sale, which gets around the problems of existing online shops run by Nintendo, Sony and MS. We can say what we want about the strides they made, but it still seems like a lot of games maintain their retail value for too long. That and "free" PSN Plus games only stay free so long as you're still subbed.

I do have some concerns about SD card limits, though. I know Wii U will have options like external HDD and SD, but I think the SD capacity limit for 3DS is 16GB right now. That a lot of space for most eShop games right now, even a 2GB card is a warehouse to such games right now, but 3DS and potentially DS games could be another story. RE: Revelations and MGS3D Snake Eater are 4GB each. Then again, those aren't games I'd feel I'd frequently play enough on 3DS, but a 24/7 365 day a year game like Animal Crossing or games like Monster Hunter certainly fit what I'd want to download as they're games I'd want to come back to.

Also, this could be part of the reason Epic's been saying nice things about Wii U:

And Metroid as a first person shooter? UNFORGIVABLE. Cartoon Zelda? Ugh. A plumber that goes around fighting turtles to save a princess? Do you rehab?

Clearly, Nintendo can never make anything that sounds weird on paper work.

I think the bigger problem is with the technical limitations of the Unreal Engine than anything Nintendo might or might not do. Not "every" game under Unreal is awful, though. Gears of War is obviously pretty polished, Bioshock is pretty great, and Borderlands remains probably my favorite game made under Unreal Engine 3, so it's not like the engine automatically makes terrible games.

              Currently playing:

              Warp (PS3)
Jak & Daxter HD Collection (PS3)
Knights in the Knightmare (PSP via PS Vita)
              Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)
              The Legend of Grimrock (PC)

Oddly enough, I think this is the first time I can recall where I've spent roughly equal amounts of time with all of my current gaming platforms.

Except you've already played Metroid Prime with it.

The Prime Trilogy ran on a heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 2 so Retro Studios isn't exactly unfamiliar with the stuff.

That's the point, it's entirely reliant on the developers to make the game function well; give a developer shitty tools and they can pull off the same thing as the guy with great tools, it's just a matter of effort.

Also keep in mind that these sorts of engines are a default, a baseline, but that that can always be modified and pushed around here and there if need be.

Given Retro's track record - well, barring the Maka Wuhu track, anyway - I'm not terribly worried.

                    MPT - Awesome
                    DKCR - Also Awesome

Nothing to worry about, really. They'll probably have time to polish it to a shine. Plus its not like they're going to shoehorn multiplayer in again

                    At least I hope not.

Picked up the Collectors Edition of Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten. I already had the regular version... but when I saw that my local Gamestop was in posession of an unclaimed CE, I had to snag it.

I've been playing it for a while now... on and off and I have to say that NIS has definately picked up the slack that they seem to have dropped when they released Disgaea 3. For one thing... all the unlockable characters are no longer DLC. There are a handful that are... but at least you can get the vast majority of them through the base game. I like that a lot better. The story is great and you can't help but laugh at just about everything they say.

For those of you who have not played a Disgaea game... or really much of anything from NIS... heres the basic idea. The Disgaea games... and many of the others that are produces by Atlus and NIS are SRPGs. Most are grid based, but some are radial movement based. The appeal of the games is that they're typically raunchy, funny and lude. The stories are generally ridiculous and only barely make sense if you allow logic to fly out the window.

As for Disgaea specifically, all of the games revolve around some protaganist with a connection to one "Underworld" or another. The first game starred Laharl, a Prince to the Netherworld and son of the Overlord. After his father is killed, he seeks to lay his claim over the realm while stopping those who are trying to overthrow him. Meanwhile, the angels of Celestia have sent an assassin to kill him. And what better assassin than a do-gooder wouldn't hurt a fly Angel named Flonne. What follows is a hillarious adventure full of Human Space Cadets, Rogue Bandits and a war between essentially Heaven and Hell.

The battles are turn based and gridded like Final Fantasy Tactics... only your units all spawn from a base pannel and you turn doesn't end until you've exhausted all possible actions from your team. The combinations are nearly limitless.

Using a mixture of basic attacks and special abilities that have impressive and sometimes humerous animations, you can wade your way through cleverly designed dungeons and maps, throwing fighting and fuzing enemies as you go.

I won't spoil anything else... but you get the idea.

What makes Disgaea 4 different from the others is that they've opened up a network option that allows you to take your army and invade other players worlds (pirate style!). I'm currently working on my group in an effort to invade Mhurron's world. He won't know what hit him.

Some other games of this type:

                      Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (PS2)
                      Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories (PS2)
Disgaea 3: Absense of Justice (PS3)
                      Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten (PS3)
Makai Kingdom: Chronicles of the Sacred Tome (PS2)
                      Phantom Brave (PS2)
                      La Pucelle Tactics (PS2)

                      and more...

If you like tactics games and raunchy humor, these games are right up your alley.

From the little Disgaea I played the battle system had as much in common with Fire Emblem as it did with FFT. Like FFT, you have and face a relatively low number (compared to Fire Emblem where you can bring 10-15 and can fight up to 200) and attacks can hit across multiple panels. Unlike FFT and like Fire Emblem though, you use your unit's turns all together and then the enemy does the same. It also seems to have a lot of positioning gimmicks and puzzles, which is also something it has in common with more recent Fire Emblems that let you push your units around or rescue them and pass them between units. Just throwing that out there since some comparisons were being made.

I've had very limited experience with Fire Emblem games myself so I missed a lot of that.

                            It was pretty fantastic.

That's surprising, I don't recall there being pop-ins with MP2, though the majority of the environments in that game were extremely dark anyway. The Last Remnant was a shining example of everything that can go wrong with that engine sadly >_<

Also, Gears of War typically runs at a much slower pace than Metroid because it's a cover-based shooter.

Tales of Graces F (Still). At save point before the final boss of Linage and Legacies. 79.5 hours for the main story, most requests, most sidequests, plus the epilogue and its sidequests. Not to shabby. Still have Zonecage and the cameo trio fight (Veigue, Amber and Reala). Have to beat the last Valkynes dragon as well for Zonecage.
