I think you just have the memory of KH and Advent Children emo-goth Cloud too fresh in your mind. Cloud was hilariously mean to Barrett during his identity crisis and developed into a decent, functional human being with feelings after his crisis was resolved.

All Sephiroth did was call you a puppet the whole game long.

There are also recent interviews with Miyamoto saying rather than remake old games personally, he'd like to do some sequels or original projects inspired by games like Link to the Past. A Super Mario 4 would follow that logic.

That and people seem to lump Cloud into a category with Squall as dark and brooding in comparison with characters like Zidane or Tidus being little more lively and team oriented. I never quite got that because Cloud seems to have a pretty decent rapport with everyone else in the party.

I don't care much for Squall's rationale that he never wanted to be hurt by others because his favorite playmate left him when he was a kid. As far as I'm concerned, Squall acted like a douche because he was a douche.

Even so, its not known as that worldwide and Yoshi's Island was subtitled Super Mario World 2. Super Mario Land 3 was a Wario Land game, which wasn't a Mario game at all.

For that period, I really don't know if those numberings were valid except as a marketing tactic.

No, it's that everything Cloud says & does is basically what Zack would have, as indicated in CC - it's bizarre really how he mimicks Zack to a tee. Cloud's real personality (at least before he screwed up) was bland - he was a total wuss. A nice guy, but a dull little wuss.

I happen to find Squall to be one of the best protagonists they've ever done because he genuinely showed emotion and growth throughout the game, coming to terms with his childhood etc.

As far as I'm concerned, Cloud is little more than a placeholder with a garbage personality. Sephiroth is more or less right on the money about him (Seph in turn, is also far better in CC and I felt he made a far better Hero than a villain).
