  • Re: What games are you currently playing?

Reminds me of a really good psychology book I read (can't recall the name sadly @_@) that pretty much debunks the entire notion of a Spock character - basically every decision you make involves your emotions either on a conscious or subconscious level, and that it's virtually impossible to do otherwise. The only beings that could actually make cold, calculated, emotionless decisions like that would be machines and even that's subject to questioning as far as the potential for AI goes.

Vulcans were never entirely emotionless, though. They embraced logic because of the violence their emotions wrought upon their culture, without meditations that focus them on logic they'd more or less be just like the Romulans. Mind melds and Pon Farr tend to show this can be too taxing and there must be an emotional release.

Basically, if a Vulcan can't have sex when Pon Farr takes hold of them, they'll kill somebody instead. The current Spock has Uhura, though, so I think he'll be OK.

I think, by necessity, any AI advanced enough to make meaningful decisions would have to be just as emotional as us, because what else would we model an AI after other than our own brain? Trying to come up with a machine that thinks better than a human is like asking a blind man to describe color. Hell, maybe emotions are a direct consequence of conscious thought. After all, you don't just feel arbitrarily, you feel because you thought of or realized something. /majortangent

When I complain about IGN and the kind of community it cultivates, this is exactly what I'm talking about.

IGN Readers Vote on Nintendo Franchise Revival - Nintendo 3DS Feature at IGN

#1 Star Fox - OK, fair enough, its hit a bit of a rough patch these last several years.
#2 Earthbound - Yeah, its deserving, but given the franchise's history of never showing up in the US, I wouldn't get my hopes up
#3 Metroid - Why? Just give it back to Retro for 3D and put Sakamoto back on the 2D stuff. It doesn't need a revival, just a refocus.
#4 F-Zero - Ok, another fair one, but does anyone really care enough anymore?
#5 Donkey Kong Country - Again, why? Last game was excellent and sold over five million copies. Seems in good hands with Retro.
#6 Ice Climbers - OK, you can't be serious. I could see like a eShop reboot, but this stuff doesn't sell on consoles now
#7 Kirby - Another IP that's plentiful and doing well
#8 Star Tropics - Why bother? Of the 3% that clearly remembered it, why didn't they remember it wasn't really that good?

I think a lot of Nintendo's 80's arcade classics could enjoy a revival as eShop games, as I've said, but they're also making new IPs on eShop with that sort of spirit and charm right now so that could stand to wait. Everything I'd like to see revived pretty much fits the eShop. Nintendo's core IPs are well off enough and we're still due a Pikmin game and a new Luigi's Mansion is coming, something new is more appropriate, preferably for the Wii U.

Not exactly, it more or less evolved into the "Art Style" series. Skip Ltd and Q-Games ended up putting the remaining games of that series out as the Art Style games on DSiWare and WiiWare services. They were among the games that were more well received on those services, too. They are the only games that made it to America, though, I don't think any of the bitGenerations stuff did.

Closing in on my platinum trophy on Naruto UNS Generations. Not sure if I'm going to tough it out and grind out the rest of the "80% of all titles" thing; after 30 hours of gameplay I'm only at 53% of titles collected (out of 551). Hard part (complete all Survival mode missions) is already done, though.

Knights in the Nightmare is turning out to be a very, very strange game. It's like Final Fantasy Tactics had a head-on collision with a bullet hell shooter. Basically you do some sort-of-turn-based strategy RPG combat, but your controlling unit (the Wisp) floats around the screen and has to dodge enemy bullets while you're trying to activate your units to counter-attack. There seem to be a TON of missable items in this game, so there's also an extra level of challenge there.

Xenoblade Chronicles arrives for me tomorrow; might actually have to move my Wii back in front of my main gaming TV (though the jaggies may kill me).

I'm hoping you ahve the DS version of KitN, the PSP version is unplayable to me because the analog can't keep up as well as 1:1 touch control.

Playing it on PS Vita. I actually like it with the stick; it plays much more like a bullet hell shooter should.

Second to last dungeon of Graces F main arc. Everyone is 53+ so feel pretty good about levels, except for Hubert. I haven't given him much battle time so he hasn't received a lot of titles, so his stats are lower. Going to finish this dungeon and its bosses then hop along on my airship to get titles for 3rd Mystic Artes (save Pascal who got hers forever and a day ago).

Asbel's current sword is a giraffe....
                      Thank you for that Psi...

Not going into spoilers but the bosses in the second to last dungeon are really skewed. The first one is weak as hell. Its mystic arte did only 1500 and nothing was ever really a threat to the party. The second boss on the other hand 1 shot Asbel and Malik with their mystic arte, 1 shot Cheria from across the field and cast a spell that 1 shot Asbel. Oh and they have this field that does damage and stun whenever they are not attacking. This all on moderate difficulty.

Still where not as hard as the bosses in the Fendel chapter. Those just sucked.

You know that franchise poll got me thinking. When was the last time an actually good Harvet Moon game came out that wasn't a port of remake in the Mineral Town series? Rune Factory is fun but I personally find it feels more like 2D Zelda with farming mechanics than an actual Harvest moon game.

I think Back to Nature and HM64 were the last good ones. I know BTN has been ported to the GBA and redone with a female protagonist more times than a Capcom game has been rehashed but it would be nice to see an HM game like one of those. I still regularly play my old PS1 version of Back to Nature today. Only problem is that in the PAL version you can't get married or the game crashes >.<

EDIT: t(-_-t) <====== In before the inevitable Farmville jokes.

Man, I miss playing Harvest Moon 64. That game was so much fun and to this day I still don't really understand why.

I never did manage to get that full photo album.
