  • Re: What games are you currently playing?

    Finally getting back to playing Bastion. Pretty fun little game so far. Picked this up a while ago but just never got beyond a certain point. Kinda unsure how to experience up ... since any experience and 'currency' you get is lost if you die or leave the area and when you complete a lvl, it's locked and you can't go back to farm xp/moneys. Been kinda tempted to start anew to figure out if I did something wrong. But whatever... still fun. Getting 1st place in several of the weapon trials is a bit of a pain for sure.

      I have so many games piling up in my queue. orz

      And that's only the games I've bought from Steam. Fortunately importing console games is "complicated" enough with delivery times and shipping costs to make me stop from buying yet more games. Steam on the other hand is cheaper and faster, so I get pwned every time they put yet another cool game on sale.

      I blame Skyrim, but I knew this would happen when I bought it. XD

          But only for a month, so they don't throw my char into Oblivion in case I decide to come back later. <_<;

                I've gotten to that point where FFXIII finally becomes somewhat likeable. Even so, if this game had been more about Sazh and Fang and less about the other people, I think the entire game would have been better for it. Then again, that would be a game about a world-weary middle-aged man who becomes a l'Cie who meets a very attractive l'Cie woman with really bad hair and fixation on underage girls. The chocobo Sazh keeps with him grows up and becomes an awesome healer and support character and Sazh, Fang and Chocobo save the world from the evils that plague it.

                They never meet those other people, as they all fail their focus and become Cie'th. Some kid named Hope is the first they meet and he goes Cie'th and they kill him.

                Instantly better game, even if everything else was totally linear in terms of world and skill growth.

                  Had this been the story in FFXIII I would totally have enjoyed it 1000% more.

                  • Re: What games are you currently playing?

                    I'm playing the XIII-2 demo right now.

                    I think this might be the first game to make me like a QTE because the QTE has an actual sense of utility to it. Since Serah and Noel don't both have access to Ravager roles in the initial fight, timing the right inputs induces stagger in its stead, which is nice even if you have both roles there. Additionally there's special spoils awarded for completing the QTEs. Finally, someone got it right.

                    The camerawork so far is light years ahead of XIII's janky camera, exploration segments and battle camera are both smooth. I had one fight in FFXIII today, the end Palompolam fight - the camera just hopped all over because it couldn't handle the mass of the cruiser and everything it was tossing at my party. Also, its not game over when the leader dies, leader switches to who is still alive.

                    You can actually walk up to NPCs and they have various things to say rather than meaningless one-offs. I do wish everyone with a ",,," prompt over their head and the ones with quests are signified by a circled exclamation point on the map.

                    Chocolina is a freak, but certainly in the running with O'aka for best FF merchant ever. What Mog does is a complete mystery. He/She doesn't seem to have a combat role, but its the target of jokes, it speaks in riddles and the pompom lights up dark passages.

                    Paradigm Packs are more or less added that monster to your party, so you're seldom ever short a third party member in this game, which was a common problem for FFXIII in letting you used the Paradigm Shift system to its fullest. You can equip up to three and arrange them for whatever paradigm you need based upon the role a monster has. The monsters roles are fixed, but they can be leveled via Crystarium like the other characters.

                    Feral Link is a manually activated QTE that lets you use a monsters unique ability in battle. Think of it like a beastmaster using Sic. Sadly it has a meter attached and it might not be useful again for up to three battles

                    So far its feeling like the game we could have gotten two years ago. I doubt the story here is much better, but I'm digging the gameplay upgrades and liking the soundtrack. The early reviews are saying this one hosts a lot more variety of things to do and see than XIII did and that's usually more than enough to make me a happy camper in an FF game. FFVIII and X-2 proved story needn't be the end-all for me to enjoy the game itself as a whole.

                      all the Valis games are awesome, the first 3 for TG-16 CD where wonderful too

                      as for me, right now I am playing Blue Dragon, needed something a bit more easy going for a bit. I am also working on modding a Toploading NES I have for composite out, and finishing the repair on my Game Gear ^.^

                      • Re: What games are you currently playing?

                        I should also mention SE finally got around to playing Super Mario RPG and realized how to make pre-emptive strikes fun and useful.

                        FFXIII-2 more or less has random encounters in the sense they just appear on the field right on top of you as temporal distortions, but you can actually run from them. When one of these distortions strikes and enemies appear, however, you have a short window in which to hit enemies to enter battle. This preemptive strike pushes the stagger meter on all enemies high - as expected - but you're also granted Haste so you can make the most of that advantage, which is a nice perk.

                        Also, like X-2, there will be a New Game Plus, it seems. Why is it all the sequels get new game plus with SE games. I think the Chrono series is the only one where that's even a standard feature.

                          They don't want to mess with the space time continuum of course. But since Chrono was completely about messing up history it had to have it by default.

                            OK, the Asura's Wrath demo is absolutely the most fucking terrible thing I've ever played.

                            Imagine taking Panzer Dragoon, Dragon Ball Z and Heavy Rain and mixing them all up and no aspect of it being good. The on-rail shooter bits are totally amateur. The story is Dragon Ball Z stupid and Heavy Rain stupid at the same time. I would compare it to Dragon's Lair, but that would be totally unfair to Dragon's Lair. At least Dragon's Lair was entertaining for its time, this is just insulting to anyone's intelligence.

                            Capcom greenlighted this utter piece of shit and cancelled MML3? Really?

                            Cyberconnect2 developed it, but still, they've done decent passable stuff before. This is rancid. It so bad that when it hits the bargain bin everyone should buy it just to own a reminder of how awful a game can be. I would rather be forced to play Duke Nukem Forever or Hyperdimensional Neptunia while chewing on wasabi peas and having Texas Pete shot into my eyes. If Asura's Wrath was the only video game in the world, I'd give up video games.

                            I can't boycott Capcom when they're releasing awful shit like this. I wanted to boycott something good to send a message. If Dragon's Dogma is also this bad, I'm just going to have an empty threat on that boycott thing. Maybe Capcom should continue whoring existing IPs. Maybe its better for them, because I cannot think of anything that has been published by them that would probably earn zero out of ten from all reviewers reviewers.

                              Not really understanding the logic there;

                              I mean if they're putting out nothing but garbage, wouldn't that just lend more support against them in favor of getting their damn act together? The only thing they have coming up I'm even remotely interested in is Racoon City and even that's kind of iffy - looks like a fun rental at best. Not that I would buy anything from them regardless.

                              Compare this to Konami and Silent Hill Downpour which is looking more and more amazing. Joystiq published an article on it recently detailing that it will be much more open like the original games and even have sidequests O.O;

                              Everything I read in that article was highly encouraging and it's about damned time too after how bad the last few games were.

                                I think you need to play this demo to see how terrible it is. As I said its so awful boycotting it is an empty threat. Simply releasing this game would do more damage to Capcom than supporting SOPA would.

                                I just wanted to see Capcom on their knees and humbled, not watch them put a gun to thier head and pull the trigger.
