Finally managed to fix all the bullshit problems (it still doesn't reflect well on Ubisoft at all).

I've only played part of the Tutorial Campaign so far, but holy shit it's awesome. They've made some very significant changes, but overall I'm loving the game. It's like a mix of 3 and 5. The only thing I find a bit overwhelming is the new skill system. Gone is the old way of leveling up and then picking between a set of randomly offered skills.

Instead you are now given ability points for your Hero at each level, that you can spend on various tech trees. Like before, you would be offered a choice of skills from select categories such as Offense/Earth Magic/Tactics what have you (depending on the game - they've always changed it up every title) usually with respects to your class/alignment.

Now you're basically free to build your hero however the hell you want (you can even create custom heroes at the main menu!) with extra options opening up depending on if your hero is on the path of Blood or Tears. It's all rather complicated but ultimately I feel like this is finally the game that will overthrow 3 as the best in the series. I'll discuss it more at length if anyone's interested.

If you never got into the series before, or were put off by 4 and 5 (as many were) 6 is extremely well done from what I've seen so far. I'm going to try a skirmish later once this damn headache goes away so I can try out the undead. I want to see if they fixed the Necromancers this time around as they were very shitty and underpowered in 5 with that ridiculous weekly limit on raising creatures.

              Currently playing:

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron (PS3)

This is a really pretty game with the most impenetrably nonsensical story I've seen in quite some time. Not sure why it's getting so much hate. It's a little uneven and some of the 3D platforming can die in a fire, but the basic gameplay is fun.

              On tap:

No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise (PS3)
Haven't had a chance to even unwrap this yet, looking forward to seeing how different it is with PS Move versus the Wiimote.

On its way to me via Amazon but not here yet:

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP)
This game gets my vote for dumbest video game title in the past several years, but hey for $15, how do you go wrong?

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (PSP)
I've heard nothing but good things about this. Looking forward to trying it!

Seeing as NMH only ever used accelerometers on the Wii and would only use them for the Move version as well there is no difference - other than the ones people make up in their heads, I suppose.

Just beat the main storyline of Dragon Quest IX. Proceed to go for all the extra materials all on my lonesome (this game is really designed with multiplayer in mind, but I don't have anybody to play things like this with)?

                  Or onto the next game...

Well, if you have a 3DS, Devil Survivor Overclocked is out on Tuesay, it had like five different endings with different endgames originally and now there's that 8th Day scenario.

Plus Aliens Infestation for DS and Star Fox 64 for 3DS aren't that far off.

Ok, finished El Shaddai. Starting digging into trophies and then realized there's no way I'll ever get platinum on this game. There's a trophy that requires that you get Godly rank on every single chapter on Hard. Which, from what I can tell, makes this game harder than Ninja Gaiden or Demon's Souls or Catherine to platinum, because the game isn't even that easy on Normal, let alone trying to score hundreds of thousands of extra points on Hard.

Next up: No More Heroes on PS3. Will see if I can finish it before Deus Ex explodes my universe on Tuesday.

Playing FFIV: The Interlude right now. Picked up The Complete Collection on PSP for $30 at EB yesterday. The enhanced visuals and everything is nice, but I'm really mad that after advertising otherwise, they pulled some of the major features from the DS version that were supposed to be included - the enhanced job system and voice work. No maps either, so I'm really just going to skip playing FFIV proper and go right into the Interlude & After Years.

If I feel like playing the original game again, I'll do it on my DS. Very disappointed in SE.

I don't think it was ever promised that the VOs for the DS version would make it over, though the Augment system and restructured spell lists from the DS version was promised as part of the package.

So yeah, I'm sticking with the DS version and will just do the other content when I get a Vita.

Went to the 3DS eShop and SE was nice enough to dig into their Taito backlog and rerelease Qix. Also picked up the 3D update to Xevious, which is totally great. People have been kidna uneccessarily harsh about the eShop.

I mean sure, I don't think anyone wanted Urban Champion in 3D, but I don't think you can just crank out a 3D version of A Link to the Past as easily as Urban Champion, either. Xevious and Excitebike just don't have a lot of graphical variety to them. Those are easier to test out first, though I suppose i would have rather Nintendo gone with Ice Climbers, Balloon Fighter, Kung Fu Master or something just a bit more classic. I don't think anyone considers Urban Champion a classic.

One of the rather hilarious complaints about Xevious was that they used clouds to maintain the original aspect ratio of the game otherwise. This is pretty much proof many game journalists of today have never played a top-down shmup, much less done so in an arcade. If they had, they'd know that the monitors for shooters were turned sideways in the cabinet. That's what Xevious is emulating and back in the day consoles tried what they could to emulate the arcade experience.

EDIT: Also, I forgot Qix was the game that had the sombrero dude that played guitar if you got a high score.

I guess that was their answer to some rockets blasting off and russian dudes dancing in Tetris at the time. Pity Nintendo can't wrangle the rights to get Tetris back out for VC. Its the only version of Tetris I feel right playing, aside from Tetris DS. I never liked the EA versions.

The last time I played Qix was in the arcade 25 years ago. Any other version pales in comparison.

Fired up No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise on PS3 earlier today. Plays much like the Wii version. PS Move controls feel almost exactly like the Wii, except for some reason recharging the beam katana is a bit sketchier. Graphics are cleaner and more detailed, but there are still nagging problems with frame rate stuttering and some occasional screen tear. Load times seem pretty good in this version, possibly even faster than the Wii version, so they must have fixed whatever was wrong with the original Japanese release.

Yeah, well, they don't exactly port the Arcade version of Qix around on anything, really.

I just don't see the point in the PS3 version of NMH. There are zero worthwhile reasons to own it over the Wii versions and the fact Konami resorted to add-on content to a game that was complete four years ago is a crock. Yeah, yeah, they're adding NMH2 stuff. Still not worth it, I had those boss fights last year in NMH2 and the final boss is still among the infuriatingly cheap in any game in history.

Its like Konami wanted to release a definitive version and then backed away from the idea to nickel-and-dime PS3 gamers, and they did it with what was two complete games on the Wii.

How I wish this gaming generation would choke on its own bullshit and die.

True. I wouldn't mind a Qix re-imagined the way Namco has with Pac-Man Championship DX, however. The prior iterations of it leave me cold, though.

Mostly true, though the PS3 version has trophies. Ordinarily not terribly important, but for a game that revels in gamer e-peen, it suits the the gameplay more than most.

I don't think that's fair, really. Gaming companies have always done whatever benefits their bottom line (and to whatever extent artistic vision can be accomodated, that as well). In the grand scheme of things, NMH on PS3 isn't really a terrible thing compared to a lot of the corporate douchebaggery we've seen of late (Ubisoft's always-online DRM, Capcom's loltastic $5 DLC characters, Freemium games out the yin-yang, etc.).

It lets people who never played the Wii version get a chance to experience what is a pretty good game, if nothing else. That might not mean much to you since you've already played the Wii version of NMH1 and NMH2, but considering how few copies of the games were sold overall on the Wii, that's not really that many people that are like you (I'd say me too, but I never got a chance to play NMH2).
