OK, I've hit one of the "holy shit" moments of Metroid: Other M.

For what the game lacks in terms of being interconnected, it makes up for in boss, mini-boss and even enemy ambushes. There are more boss fights here than in any other Metroid title, though Fusion would be a close second

There are still plenty of item pick-up to find, but finding them isn't as involved as the Prime games were.

I would love to see the framework and assets of this game handed over to Retro Studios to see what they could do with it in new game. Not that what Team Ninja did was bad, I actually like the combat. Feels like a hybrid of Super Metroid and the NES Ninja Gaidens (which Team Ninja actually never had a hand in). I just think Retro has the edge on puzzles and interconnectivity in their worlds when it comes to 3D.

I've actually enjoyed the change of pace in this installment, though. Too many people complain about it not being as traditional, but really, all the other Metroid games are so huge and vast that its easy to forget where everything was by the next time you play it. That's really the beauty of a game like Super Metroid, I'm still learning things about that game since the first time I played it 16 years ago.

Theater Mode will play all scenes back to back and even connect the movement, if in an abbreviated way, as well as abbreviated version of boss and miniboss fights.

So not only is there a theater mode, someone finally did theater mode right.

Picked up Ivy the Kiwi? today. For those that don't know what it is, its Yuki Naka's first real console game since his departure from Sega and Sonic Team. There's a DS version ($20)and Wii Version ($30).

Its about a little bird named Ivy, who hatched from her egg to find herself all alone, so she set sets out on a journey to find her mama. Problem is, she can't fly because her wings are still stuck in her shell, so it rests on your shoulders to guide her along the game's various levels by creating vines with the Wiimote or Touch screen. You can use these vines to help her walk across gaps, push her upward or pull on the middle of vines to fling her high into the air, which also lets her smash certain bricks with her beak.



As you can see, its got a storybook kinda look to it.

One would suspect the DS version might be a touch more accurate, but I decided on the Wii version and the Wiimote controls are very precise as well, you probably just have better physical control on the DS version. But if you want to do the multiplayer and really enjoy it, you have to go splitscreen on the Wii with some friends.

The multiplayer is kind of a like a race, but if you can keep the pace with your bird, you can actually move your cursor over to an oppenent's screen and try to sabotage them. Sabotage vines only last three seconds, though, so its a risk for both sides. While you might try to screw someone over, your bird is still on her own unattended.

If you liked Naka's non-Sonic titles, such as Chu Chu Rocket, you might want to give this one a try. Doesn't hurt that its also going at a nice price on both versions.

There are over 100 levels, you're give roughly five minutes to finish each one. As you play, "Stage Trial" expands to include levels you've completed, so you can return to them and try to find everything and receive medals showing how much you did in each level.

It gets trickier as you go, sometimes you have to manage Ivy and a boulder she'll need to break down certain barriers. She can only take one hit, too, so if you die you start over again at the beginning of the level.

I like it because it kinda reminds me of Gumshoe a little bit.

Strangely enough, Gamestop only had one copy of each version. It was released rather quietly but I suspect the attractive pricing might get Wal-Mart or Target to grab a few more copies than Gamestop seems to be willing to.

The Best Buy I went to only had the DS version in stock.

Sega's Fail of the Month:

Phantasy Star Portable 2 came out today and within 22+ hours of availability the matchmaking servers are not up. I redeemed my voucher and everything and its a no-go.

Look guys, I know Halo: Reach came out today, but you still have to get this job done.

I'd complain about the voucher thing, but considering I hate dupers/hackers, this does serve as a means of tracking and shutting them down. Sega did actually make an effort to moderate the matchmaking servers during the demo/beta phase. Turns out there were plenty of teenage boys wanting to use PS Portable 2 for MySpace-style hook-ups. Sega put an end to that.

Ah, to be young and socially inept.

Decided to go to TGS on Sunday. Anybody have recommendations on what to check out? I'm pretty much completely clueless, the only other gaming convention I've been to is FFFF06.
