LOL, little picky there Draco Dragon so I said $200 I was rounding it down, point is they were way off on the price by over $200-$400. That's a huge number to be off on with an estimate.

        Sorry if already stated.

If Sony is smart (which they somewhat are) they will releae the Playstation 3 in America this fall.

The price on the other hand... I see it being 500 bucks.

w/o blue ray, it'll probably be around 300. W/ blue ray, I can't imagine what the price will be.

It'll have to have Blue Ray if Sony seriously wants to push this medium.

Re: PS3 in '07??? Say it ain't so!

Tomorrow could be the big day.

On March 15th, 2006, Sony will hold the fabled "Playstation Conference," now titled "Playstation Business Briefing 2006 March." Ken Kutaragi himself will be there.

Could this be the day Japan gets the big announcement, and learns when the system is being released on their side of the world, or even for how much?

My guess? Japan will get the PS3 in a single SKU in May 2006 for approximately $400 USD, with the Hard Disk Drive retailing separately. At GDC later this month, Phil Harrison will mention the current projected release window for the PS3 in North America, and it will be finalized at E3 in May. I predict that the Playstation 3 will launch in America at $350 in October 2006, also without the Hard Disk Drive included.

Personally, I do believe that Sony will attempt to sell the Hard Disk Drive separately from the console, in order to keep costs per SKU as low as possible and launch the Playstation 3 at a retail price lower than the Xbox 360, as it will undoubtably look quite appetizing at a lower price to those other than early-adopters, even without the many accessories included with the 360.

                PS3 Delayed to November?
Blu-ray copy protection problems may delay the system's release by six months.
                by Chris Roper

March 14, 2006 - Though Sony has been steadfast in sticking with its "Spring 2006" launch timeframe for the PlayStation 3, the morning edition of Japanese business paper Nihon Keizai Shimbun is reporting that the system will see its release pushed back until early November of this year.

Citing problems with finalizing the copy protection scheme for Blu-ray, which the PlayStation 3 will employ as its removable media, Nihon Keizai Shimbun believes that the system will hit store shelves some six months later than expected. According to the paper, the Blu-ray copy protection problem is the only thing holding back the release of the console as its other core parts, including the cutting edge Cell processor, are all on schedule.

IGN contacted Sony US representatives who unsurprisingly told us, "Sony Computer Entertainment does not comment on speculation stories."

Stay tuned for more information, which may be sooner than later as the PlayStation Business Briefing 2006 is set to begin in Japan at roughly midnight PST tonight.
                Pretty much confirmed.

So, a delay is confirmed. The good news, however, is that if it is due to problems with Blu-Ray specifications, this likely does not mean a delay for other territories of the world, and the PS3 should still see release in the US this year.

                  http://www.gamespot.com/news/6145919.html

Gamespot also reports the same, but states that the developer's meeting scheduled for tomorrow has been turned into a complete Press Conference. A massive announcement is surely coming tomorrow.

In the end, is anyone really surprised? If reports are accurate though, this is not entirely Sony's fault, and not necessarily a problem with the hardware that other rumours have accused of. However, with a delay of the system giving Japan a full year of Xbox 360 and, worst case scenario, well over a year in other parts of the world, could we perhaps see slight changes to the PS3 hardware, such as the RAM increases that were given to both the PS2 and the PSP before launch?

To be honest, I'm perfectly fine whether it comes out in America this year or not. The PS2 has plenty of life left, and for me at least, has much more potential for success than any other system out there does, including the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo DS.

It shouldn't delay games either. They still have the correct specs on making the games. Only thing is it will just be a bit longer before they can put them on disc, which a completely separate process and shouldn't affect development at all.

Re: PS3 in '07??? Say it ain't so!

[UPDATE] Sony confirms delay for next-gen console, says it will support an Xbox Live-like online gaming service; console will require a 60GB Linux HDD--but will it be sold separately?

TOKYO--Today at the 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing in Tokyo, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutagari made it official--the PlayStation 3 has been delayed. The news confirmed widely circulated Japanese newspaper reports, which said that the delay was due to copyright-protection problems with the next-generation console's Blu-ray drive. For his part, Kutaragi would only say the delay was due to "Blu-ray spec finalization."

Kutaragi told the crowd at the event that the PS3 would now launch in November 2006 worldwide. That dispelled fears that the console would make it to Japan in time by the fall, but would miss the all-important holiday shopping season in the US and Europe. In fact, Kutaragi explicitly told the crowd of game retailers and journalists present that the PS3 would arrive before Thanksgiving in all territories.

Besides the delay, Kutaragi also made official another widely reported aspect of the PS3. He said that Sony is indeed preparing an Xbox Live-like online gaming service for the console, which would be called the "PlayStation Network Platform." Though he was short on specifics, the executive did say that currently Sony planned the service to be "free."

While the simultaneous tri-territory PS3 scheme may sound much like Microsoft's international launch of the Xbox 360, Sony plans to avoid the shortages that befell its competitor. Kutaragi said that the company plans on producing at least one million units of the console each month in order to keep the supply channel full. He said the goal was to ship 6 million PS3s worldwide by March 2007.

[UPDATE] The SCE president also told the crowd that the PS3 would use a 60GB 2.5" hard disc drive (HDD). A slide show during the presentation said the HDD would will be loaded with the Linux operating system versus Microsoft's Windows OS. The show also said it could be used as a "home server" and be directly connected to the Internet, and be full "upgradeable."

Kutaragi also made it clear that the hard drive will be necessary to play games--Sony is telling developers to make games assuming every PS3 has a hard drive installed. "We view the Hard Drive to be mandatory for the PS3," he said. "Rather than have developers create games for the PS3 with or without the HDD, we will be asking them to develop games as though all PS3s have the HDD installed."

However, Kutaragi revealed that Sony had not decided whether or not the PlayStation 3 would come with the hard-drive pre-installed. "We might end up installing it in all PS3s, though that depends on the market," he said. This raises the possibility that the PS3 could be sold without a piece of hardware needed to play PS3 games--in effect forcing consumers to buy a peripheral for basic functionality.

Kutaragi also said that PS3 games would be released only on Blu-ray discs, as DVDs have become too easy for software pirates to duplicate. The high-capacity format is capable of storing around 50GB on a single disc. Sony reps confirmed the PS3 will still play DVDs and CDs, as well as PS2 and PSone discs, as previously announced.
I knew sony hade planed like this .. I cant wait to buy it XD..

Yeah, read that about the delay. Little bit of a bummer that it got pushed back, but that is cool they are shooting to do a world wide release. As for not having a HDD with the PS3 and making the game mandatory to work as if a HDD was present.....that looks like it can be troublesome.

Actually, it's not a bad idea.

Consider that Blu-ray players are comming in May for crazy prices.

So we know they can make it, but most likely on a shortage.

So instead of unstocking, and selling off in JP in the summer, they want to hit the holiday season, with an expected Overstock.

This can be good or bad..at this point because as always putting your money where your mouth is can lead to sore gums...take a look at 360.
