Only bad thing i've been hearing about the ps3 is the copy protection. I've read that the blu-Ray disks once played for the first time, are "marked" to that specific drive, no lending, and if your drive breaks, byebye games.

Seriosly, this is the thing they've designed for it.

Things always change, release dates, prices, hardware, etc., and it will always be that way. They can say that it will be released in spring but that doesn't mean it will. With what they are up against, I find it highly unlikely that it will. But does that mean in 2007? God I hope not and I highly doubt that also. They can get away with it because they have a firm foot in the video game industry and it wouldn't really hurt them too much with the fans. The place it will hurt is in the wallet. I think a fall release is more likely. It stays this year which will make the fans happy, its not too long off the intended release so the wallet won't suffer too much, and it will be during the holiday rush so there will be lots of buzz and sales. It just seems the most logical choice.

I would have to agree with TGM, a fall release is the most logical and most probable.

From what I gather, that was a technology they're working on, but won't be implemented in the PS3. There is a thread somewhere about this same subject floating around somewhere on these forums. I'll find it later.

No that technology will probably never see the likes of day.

it was an old patient when dvd was still in it's infancy, and only recently someone actually read it.

Basically it was a sub-standard cobweb in the attic.

There are a couple of specs on BR DRM, but they're all geared twoards BR movies and not really to games.

Re: PS3 in '07??? Say it ain't so!

I take much of what you see right now as just analyst trying to find a reason. For some people they just can't wrap their mind around the idea that a company would intentially risk holding something off to the LAST MINUTE!

Sony already had stated that info as far as pricing and such for the PS3 would be discussed in their Devstation Confrence to be held March 1st. So we just like 5 more days to wait and will probably be hearing more of what is actually going to happen.

So what you see in these next 5 days I would chalk up to the Hype Media starting it's engine... Because like any business knows good news or bad news as long as they become news it becomes free advertisement for them. Best way to get advertisement is frequently to make the news stations look like impatient idiots.

So I say just hold on, wait till the Devstation Confrence has passed then start your panicing.

I'll do what I can, but I make no promises.
Still seems odd that an investment company like Merrill Lynch would be the ones making this kind of announcement. Especially if they end up being wrong. I don't know about ya'll, but if a company can't even get accurate information about a major product release w/o shooting their mouths off, I don't really want them managing my money.

Re: PS3 in '07??? Say it ain't so!

Most of you don't even have a clue about Sony's own financial health.

They're loan ratings haven't improved since the last time I put $10,000 into the company purchasing stocks and what have you during the PSX launch. Moody ratings (What the financial industry uses as standard) aren't hot for a high profile company like Sony.

What's worse is that PS2 losses were massive in the first two years of the systems launch and the company wrote off a huge blanket loss. The investment they put into the fab plants and plants in China haven't exactly paid for themselves either, especially since they've constructed additional facilities to help with the PS3.

IBM has already announced pricing, so analysts are not entirely wrong about the cost of those chips. IBM had already made plans to produce the next generation of cell technology without Sony and might eventually compete against Sony in the set-top market within the next 5 years. It's pretty typical for this industry and I can point to several instances of this happening over the past decade alone...

nVidia parts have always been expensive and if Sony expects to compete with ATI's technology, someone is going to have to suffer losses. I'm pretty sure nVidia didn't enter any contracts looking to saddle major losses either.

All I can just say is if the PS3 was expected to launch sometime this summer, Sony would've announced that already. Considering we're almost in Spring already, that really means that PS3 will most likely be released late this year and the possibilities of missing that launch window is very real.

Me? I couldn't be happier with PS3's delay. Gives me more time to finish up the life of PS2. Adjust with my 360. Let my wallet chill a bit, snag revolution. Then, then buy the big kahuna which will no way be under 500 lol.
Eh, we'll see I guess. I'm still willing to bet it will be under/around $400. Sure sony will take a hit at first, but in the long run they would profit.

As for the PS2, I'm glad that it's being delayed as well. People seem to think that the current-gen is "out of date" / getting stale even when games like Okami/MGS: Subsistence are coming out in a few months.

Re: PS3 in '07??? Say it ain't so!

Sony has reiterated many times that they don't plan to abandon the PS2 at all in the next few years. There are rumours circulating that Sony's going to focus on dropping the price of the PS2 soon and making it the "even cheaper alternative" to the Nintendo Revolution, with its already massive install base of over 100 million units, huge library and continuing developer support, and low development costs.

Personally, I don't expect the PS2 to go anywhere until 2010. 100 million units won't just disappear into thin air in the next few years, and Sony's surely not going to forget that.

Delay or not, I just want some NEWS!

I'm gonna be bouncing off the walls in anticipation this week.

Sony's holding the Playstation Destination 2006 conference from the 27th-3rd, as well as the DevStation conference in Europe on the 1st and 2nd of March.

Nothing has been said of what they'll speak about at Playstation Destination, but Devstation's website confirms that Sony will be discussing things such as Networking and Middleware.

                              Can't wait!

Yeah man PS2 is in its finest year, no question. Well lol, if you like RPGs that's especially true, I duno about action games, no DMC, no new tekken etc.

But I mean... KH2...Grandia III... Final Fantasy XII, MGS: Subsistence (sorry not sure what Okami is but you sound impressed so)...Okami. All in the early portion of this year, that's an insane line up, and that's just off the top of my head.

"Sure sony will take a hit at first, but in the long run they would profit." And that's deffinitely true. They would more than make back the loss on the initial system in no time I'm sure. I just don't see under 500 happening given the hardware and the age of their target audiance :/
