PS3 Features Revealed, PSP Well Cared

Jak_The_Man, An active member from US PlayStation forums, has posted a short article ( http://boardsus.playstation.com/play...cending&page=1 ) after reading the latest PlayStation Magazine. The information contained is very interesting...

- PS3 will have online service that goes beyond Xbox live

- PS3 will be a DVR (Digital Video Recorder)

- It will be able to connect with the PSP

- There are a lot of games being worked on for it right now in the US (a lot more then what people know about)

- The final PS3 dev kit is a lot faster than they thought (according to the developer)

- The PS3 will have an iTunes type service to let you download Hi-Def movies, music, etc

- The PS3 will take the media center functionality the 360 has even further

- PS3 will serve as a location free player for the PSP, means you can watch the DVD’s that you have in your PS3 on your PSP (from anywhere in the world), or any other video files you have on your ps3, though this is still only being planned.

- PS3 will be able to send its files straight to the PSP from anywhere in the world, and it can also control its DVR functionalities

- Firmware updates will add more functionality, much like with the PSP

- The Blu-ray Player functionality doesn't cost as much as a stand alone player because the Cell and RSX can take care of a lot of the stuff the PS3 will need to do to be able to read the disks

- Fall release date for PS3, no release date for online service, but expected to launch with the system

- All these new features makes a PSP worth buying… together with a PS3. ;-)

As you can see, there are quite some strange icons we’ve never seen before in the photo of the PSP, a glimpse of the next firmware?




This scan, as noted in the bottom left hand corner, discusses the CES (Consumer Electronics Show), held the beginning of last month. Sony definitely plans to keep updating their precious PSP and will surely use it to their advantage with the release of the PlayStation 3, interacting with it any way they seem fit. We are definitely interested to see what the future holds for the powerful handheld, and only hope that Sony will not quash any ability to play homebrew on a product we payed a good amount of money to do with as we please.

not sure how the ps3 could send data to ur psp anywhere in the world unless the ps3 is on at home and turned on and connected online. which is a bad idea if ur outta town to leave stuff on o.O

Well the PSP has been confirmed to connect to it already. And was said it would work much like the GBA did with the GC on some games. The rest is new but I guess possible? DLing content from your system anywhere sounds a bit nuts, mainly in that I would think you would have to leave your PS3 on haha.

And I duno, that's a bit vague to say the online service will go "beyond" that of the 360.

There are a lot of DVR type devices, one of which is out by sony and allows you to send it to your PSP currently.. but it's a small device that doesn't take a lot of power and is connected directly to your cable.

I'm glad all these features are coming, but sometimes I kinda just want the old sentiments of... This plays games.

Oh well. Now I'm becoming an oldschool gamer and I came in at playstation 1.

Maybe the system can go into standby mode (like the ps2 does), and the PSP will be able to remotely wake it up and put it back to sleep? I don't know if that's technically possible, but that's just a guess - and I think would be better than leaving it running all of the time.

Not familar with PSP power saving routine(I don't have one)

But bluetooth does have the option to wake a computer(or device) from sleep.

So it's very possible.

The thing that saps batteries is how often a bluetooth polls devices, so PSP shouldn't have that much trouble being left around.

I think currently bluetooth has about 70k/s bandwith...so probably not enough to do streaming video, so you wouldh ave to download it to PSP most likely...dang more money for bigger memory stick.

But the service is not that hard to make depending on how they do it. MS live 360 is a very bastard like method(from old live), which has a good amount of lockdown customized code, but if they can hook it up web-like xml or such...it should be seemless, and can be reused on the web-portal, or other future internet ready devices.

PS3 dev kit speed is not surpising, to anyone who's been following it. The v1 dev kits ran with a 70% CPU power, and no nividia GPU.

Given those facts, the final dev kits would most oblviously be faster.

Ohh, that makes sense and is very cool then. About the remote power, or even while it's on standby. I hate to admit it for the pricetag it's gona have, but I really see the PS3 being the king of the 3 again. Only this time not necessarily in sales, but in performance.

Not sure he means above 30 FPS, but just have higher FPS in laggy situations maybe. Least that's what I would want lol.

I'm not sure whether this if from Official Playstation Magazine (reliable) or PSM (not always reliable), but most of it sounds like believeable information.

With Location-Free support just given to the PSP, it's obvious and very wonderful that they'd add some sort of Location Free functionality to the PS3.

DVR is pretty surprising, but if it's true, it will be another welcome addition.

A unified online service is obvious, considering Kaz Hirai has been talking about it for the last 2 years and no one has ever listened to that. No doubt Sony is planning on adding support for their download service, Sony Connect, seeing as how that'll be making its way to the PSP some time soon.

I honestly don't doubt the PS3's potential to be the best next-generation console for both gaming and other entertainment purposes, and I'm more than excited for the next few weeks as we get more and more news from the upcoming conferences and conventions.

Well its a no-brainer that they have to come up with something to compete with Live. I will tell you my fear.........my wonderful online PS3 will just pull in the same mentality that Live has. *shudders* But the way of the world is to expand an include everyone and we'll learn to adapt but I my online PS2 experience and I just don't want to see it fouled.

Yeah really. I don't really need something with all these features because I don't even own a PSP. If I did, I doubt I would do anything but play games on it. Oh well, eventually they'll have an all-in-one system so I can get rid of my PC, DVD player, VCR, CD player, refridgerator, etc.

My guess is they're not going to be using blue-tooth for the streaming video but instead the internet (on the PS3's end, possibly wifi, possibly hard-lined ethernet. On the PSP's end, wifi).

I do own a PSP, so I could use a lot of this, but I see the price rising to 400-500 dollars with all of these added features and I'm thinking.. Are they trying to exclude their entire gamer-base from buying this and just include the graphic whores >.>

I'll get it anyway most likely, but after the price goes down. Maybe they'll offer two systems.. the base one being better than the rip off that the Xbox Core system was. God that's a POS right there.

Interesting, though since I don't currently own a PSP (planning on it soon, maybe tax return check), and already have a DVR that came with HDTV hookup. I am curious to see if it really will be out this fall. Been hearing so many dates its making my head spin. Its definately giving HDDVD a head start with their $500 HDDVD player and all of Sony's being atleast 1k. PS3 was supposed to be their answer to it, it could help out Toshiba and friends, atleast for a bit.
