I guess no one remembers the CAL on Sony for the DRE's...

They will fix it for free... but they won't admit there's a problem lol. Mines' a Launch Day version too, didn't have a problem for 4 years, till one day last year it just stopped working.

Edit: Working for EBGames has tought me alot about people who play videogames. Take care of your stuff, there's many times when I see systems coverd in dust/dirt with tons of scratches on it. Sometimes we even get systems traded in with roaches in them, or atleast eggs, and when you turn it on, it smells ike burning roaches. Yes, it's true.

One day I was checking games that a customer had brought to trade in, the game boxes were dirty, the discs were dirty, and when I opened one you'll never beleive what was in there. About 50 live roaches. Yes, LIVE. Now, let me tell you, I'm a 20 year old Man. I don't scream at bugs, nor am I afraid of them. Hell, many times girls from down the hall have asked me to come kill them for em haha, it's quite amusing. But, when you're just going about your business and you open up a case with LIVE roaches in it. I tossed it and screamed haha. The roaches scattered about in the store. I refused to open any more, and made the customers feel like shit.

Moral of the story, take care of your shit, and don't have roaches.

Before you make such blanket asinine statements maybe you should know what your talking about. Shortly after the PS2 was released, a vast majority of the units were unable to play the games designed for them. They also were unable to play many DVD's which was a huge selling point for the system. And then to top it off, many cd's/dvd's were damaged when in use with the unit.

So basically people went out and spent $300 on something that didn't work or didn't work the way it should. What would you do in that situation? Take it back right? WRONG! Stores would not allow you to return it most of the time and if they did take it, all you could get was another flawed unit. YAY!! So you call the company and tell them all over the internet everyone is complaining about this issue so the units are defective. With the proof staring them right in the face what do they say? No, they are not, end of story. Yes 50% or more of the units were doing the same thing but they were not defective. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!! But they did say that you could send them your unit (at your expense of course) and they would repair it (at your expense of course again!!). Wow I bought a defective product that I can't get my money back on and if I want to use it I have to pay MORE to get it to work! Yep sounds fair to me!! >.<

I bought one of these units. Slept on the sidewalk waiting for the store to open to get one! Needless to say I was extremely unhappy with the issues that followed. I still have the unit but it just takes up shelf space because its so unreliable. A $300 paper weight so to say. So you think people like us shouldn't be upset with the company because they couldn't take responsibility for the defective units until they were sued? You do? Ok I want you to take $300 of your hard earned cash right now, walk outside, stand in the middle of the street, throw the money up in the air, and walk away. There now you can say that.

No its not weird. A single person gets a bad unit and the company screws them, the first thing they think is.........oh well time to move on and not "SUE" as you seem to think. But slowly over time people communicate with one another and realize that they just didn't get a bad one, MANY people got bad units! This isn't right!! So they petition the company to do something about it. This goes back and forth for some time but in the end no real solution is reached. So rejected and angry they begin to talk about their problem. Over time someone realizes that if they all band together they can do something about it and a lawsuit is born. Then add on research time, gathering plantiffs, going through the court system (probably the longest thing of all! LOL) and all of this takes time. We all want to believe the best in someone, including a well known company that we purchase something from. We give it our best shot to work it out but sometimes they need a good old smack upside the head!

I was at a Sony interview about 6 months after the unit was released in the US. One brave soul stood up and posed a question to the Sony reps. It basically was this "As you know many people are complaining of issues with the PS2. It's all over the boards and I'm sure many people here have run into it. Raise your hand if you did. (2/3's of the room raises their hands) Are you going to do anything about this issue?" Ok so it was established that thousands over the internet were complaining of this issue and most of the people in the room had this problem with their PS2 and do you know what the Sony rep said? "We are not aware of any issues with the units, so there is nothing to fix." and blithfully went on to the next question......

Well I could believe that story InuTrunks. I know I bought 5 PS2 the 30001R version from E-Bay for $5 each. 4 of the 5 sent to me were CAKED in dust and the people complaining about it not working, 3 of them I just simply cleaned and the Disc Read Error was gone it was just simply people not keeping the system clean.

For the 30001 models (the ones first released) there were some errors you can find info about it online. The basic problems were how close the laser was mounted to the tray, bad adjustments to the laser, and internal fan not functioning as it should. The 30001R when someone took it apart they did find that the laser was mounted a little further back, fan working like it should, but the laser adjustment was still off.

Most of the actual build problems of the system iirc were not fixed till the models 35001 were released. Which kind of surprises me that it and the others after it are included. As for mine it was working fine until a friend did something stupid, should of told him to NEVER use the can of air on the area were the lense is
