  • Chrono Trigger on SNES and PS1

Ok, after hearing like 500 people go on about what a great game it is, I think I'm gonna break down and buy it. The thing is, there seem to be two versions. One for the SNES and another for PS1 thats paired with FFIV. So, this lead me to two questions:
    1. Is the PS1 version a JP version or English (read: will I be able to read it?)
    2. Since the SNES version costs like 4x as much, does this mean the PS1 version isnt as good or deviates from the original? Or is it simply b/c the SNES is the original and its as much a collector's thing as it is a game to be played and enjoyed?

    Thanks in advance.

The PS1 version is featured in Final Fantasy Chronicle, a collector's set featuring Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger.

I would definitely opt for the PS1 version, as it contains a few changes and fully some really sweet animated FMV sequences. You can find the Greatest Hits version at a few stores, but the best place to look would be eBay.

        1) PS1 version is in english.
        2) The PS1 version is exactly the same except for the loading times, which can get a little bit annoying. They did add some nice anime sequences to the PS1 version which weren't in the original. The only reason its so expensive on the SNES is the rarity of it.

I think you'll enjoy it if you like classic RPGs. It's pretty well made, similar to FF6 maybe even a little more "polished," since it was made later. Great replayability, I think you'll enjoy it.

edit: appears I got beat by a long shot, oh well leaving this here out of stubborness.

Its more of the active type of rpg right? Like secret of mana? I played that one soon after it came out, but I quit playing it for a cpl years and when I went back I had no clue where in the game I was. I did really like the being able to swing the sword myself and include a little bit of the action sequence into the rpg.

It still has turn based battles. The big thing with chrono trigger's battle system was you could do "dual" and "triple" techs with your other party members, by combining their abilities. I.E. if both character's gauges were full, one could use "Lightning" and one could use "Sword Tech A" and it would hit the enemy with "Lightning Sword." Stuff like that. It's nothing too unique but it worked well with the game at the time.

            Double Post Edited:
forgot to add, that it is similar to SoM in that you could see enemies on the field as you are walking about, and you can avoid them if necessary. If you touch them it would immediately engage in a turn based battle right there on the field, so it felt half "action" oriented in a way with the way they implemented everything.

Sounds pretty cool, I'll definately have to check it out then. I've found it on PS1 for 12 bucks on eBay.

Chrono Trigger is definately worth the time to play it. You know you can play it on your PC too right?

The problem is that many young people don't have the patience to play it or don't care for it being 2D. I personally go the purists route and would play the SNES version first, the emu of it 2nd, and last the PS1 version. But those are my choices, you pick what works for you.

I'm guessing you're saying there's an emulator for it and can dl the game on the internet?

Out of curiosity, what made you rank the 3 the way you did?
Oh, and 2d is no problem for me. I'm a Contra fanatic, nothing like getting back to your roots (pong>you).

I never played the one for SNES but the one for PS1 is awesome. The other thing about this game is that there are multiple endings so after you beat it once, you can go back play it differently and get another ending. Plus I would get the PS1 version simply because it comes with FFIV, one of the best FF out there.
