Yep, the biggest game of 2005 is probably now the mediocre-sized game of 2006.
"After much discussion, the Zelda development team has requested extra time to add new levels, more depth and even higher quality to Zelda: Twilight Princess. Consequently, we're announcing a new global launch in 2006, after the conclusion of this fiscal year (March 31). We'll provide a specific date at a later point in time. While this may come as a disappointment to many eager fans, it will absolutely enrich the game and make it a multi-million seller."
Originally planned for release this November, up against the Xbox360 and its major titles Perfect Dark Zero and Gears of War, the newest title in the Legend of Zelda saga was expected to be one of the top selling games of this year, beating records and selling Gamecubes by the minute.
Has Nintendo made the right move? They've pushed their only major holiday release on the Gamecube to the middle of next year, leaving Nintendogs to do their Christmas dirty work. In addition, Zelda will most likely have to face off against Halo 3 and the Playstation 3, instead of going one-on-one with Microsoft this November.
On the other hand, this delay could make an already spectacular-looking, eagerly awaited game even more desireable, and renew interest in the Gamecube just in time to pull fans into the Nintendo Revolution. If I know Nintendo, they'll release info regarding the Revolution version of Zelda if Twilight Princess is that successful.
I'll post information regarding Zelda updates and the new release date when they're announced.
