  • Granado Espada watching

I just wanted to create a thread to let people know about/keep track of a very interesting looking MMORPG coming out from Hanbit Ubiquitous Entertainment (JP+KR joint venture).

    http://ge.hanbiton.com/en/

No news on stateside release or beta yet, although they apparently had an alpha some time ago. A closed beta is scheduled for summer 2005 in JP and S Korea. An an open beta is expected sometime in Fall 2005 (probably JP and S KR again).

    Notes:
Character designs by Tomomi Kobayashi of SaGa fame.

            Re: Granado Espada watching

I'm trying out the beta right now (KR), and although it was very unique and exciting at the beginning (Multi-Character Control, or MCC), after a few days of EXP it was getting pretty dull. But! It’s fun again now, thanks to the various styles of missions they offer.

The biggest enjoyment of this game seems to be the missions and quests, but in order to find groups, you're required to be high level (or else, you won’t get ‘invites’) and grinding is extremely tedious. Basically, you’re going to have to grind for at least 5 days before you can start enjoying the game. Thankfully, they have an automatic mob-target-kill type of thing, so you can basically leave your PC on all night with your PT at a low level zone, hacking away for free EXP.

As you level up, at 10 digits and above you’ll be able to activate quests that allow for gaining additional characters, and that’s when it gets fun. The jobs are Fighter, Scout, Musketeer, Warlock, and Wizard. Think Fighter as DD+Tank, Scout as a WHM+BRD, Musketeer as RNG+THF, Warlock as BLM, and Wizard as RDM+BRD. My party is formed out of 2 Musketeers and a Scout, pretty good so far. There are modes of stances you can keep the other 2 characters on, since they’re AI controlled. They vary from various types of things, such as jobs, level, etc.

The missions (PvP, assault, defense) ARE fun though. They’re well designed, exciting and addictive. You can think of it as what Aht Urhgan’s going to bring to us. It’s just that finding a group is extremely frustrating unless you have some friends (imagine a DRK or DRG LFP, no offense to any players out there).

All in all, the design is hot, the music is excellent, and it's worth looking forward to. Some call GE the game that’s going to revolutionize KR MMOs. My one wish is that they make it a bit more enjoyable for low levelers.

              Quick, someone teach me Korean. ;_;

Edit: The name roughly means "Best Sword" or maybe "foremost" or "most distinguished" sword. It's not conversational Cubano so I'm not reall sure. :p

Also the gender is wrong... should be granada. Spangrish? lol...

kazuri, i don't know if you've played Lineage 2 or not, but is the grind comparable to that?
and is it free PvP? i'm worried, like I was in Lin2, about griefing.

                Thanks Yyg!

Heh, necro-bump but I have good excuse

So i've been very keen on this game the first time I heard of it, but it kinda fell off my radar because there was not much english news.

Fast foward to today and I find out it's been rebranded as "Sword of the New World" and will be coming state-side this summer! Also, it'll be free to play!

What is up with this new trend of "blurry glaring" filter Korean likes to put in their game now? Almost all recent games I tried have them. And they're so annoying I always have to turn it off....

It's called bloom, which is related to High Dynamic Range Lighting. Unfortunately there's lots of games which overuse it (GE seems to be one of them) though there are games that use it well (Twilight Princess, WoW, Half-Life 2).

All in all GE doesn't seem to be that exciting, it reminds a lot of Ragnarok Online (of which the producer is the same guy or something) with a few extra gimmicks minus the simple charm of RO. Then again, I'm in general not a fan of pure grind games which this kind of turns out to be from what I've played in the Closed Beta.
