Re: The Next-Gen War has Begun!

In the end, we won't know until TGS by the earliest. Who knows? Many people were suprised that Kutaragi was going around everywhere blabbering "The PS3 isn't aimed at the normal household" and "The PS3 is going to be expensive"...maybe he was doing so just to psych Microsoft into making themselves comfortable with a 400 dollar price tag, and shock the world with a 400-500 price for the PS3?

I wouldn't call your 499 guess any more unlikely than mine; no one but Sony has enough information about the PS3 to project a real estimate about the cost. In fact, it's highly likely they've set a price; they're just waiting for the right time to announce it.

Seems very unlikely, but hopefully we'll find out PS3's launch details in September.

You can say that almost anything Sony has done so far in terms of marketing has been better then Microsoft.

They just have more talented people with experience in that field.

So sony is no slouch in counter attacking any war of words. Considering that TGS is nearing, we should see some fresh interesting stuff.

^^ Sony also makes systems that make your living room look cool. And not in a Dorm oom type of cool, but in a "Wow, this guy is really into technology. I should have his baby" type of cool.

        The PS2 is so awsome standing erect, like a sexy Monolith of japanese mochismo. The Xbox360 looks like something out of the Apple Reject Line. Whereas the PS3 looks like it was the love child of a Bose DVD player and a PS2. Not sure if that last one is good or bad, but I know I wont have any faceplates inconvieniently falling off my PS3 ;.;

I dunno if I can agree about the PS3's attractiveness. IMO, I don't see how Sony managed to make something so ugly after giving birth to the PSP, the most beautiful creation in gaming history. The PS3 looks like a George Foreman grill, and I don't have much of an opinion about the 360's design, I don't find it too appealing.

Nintendo's Revolution is by far the best looking next-gen machine, IMO. I think it'll look really great sitting next to my TV; much more than that Fisher-Price looking Gamecube does.

            Just saw the revolution....WOW!
I agree with pai. It just looks incredible, especially when compared to gamecube. I'm also REALLY interested to see how its going to be completely backwards compatible (atleast according to the report I read, dont know if its changed since then or not), Seriously, playing the original FF, Zelda, Metroid, or Metal Gear on the new console? That'll be real interesting to see how they pull off, especially since the cartridges from nes, snes, and 64 were all different sizes.
Lets see, xbox for halo3, ps3 for MGS and whatever cool stuff they come out with, and nintendo revo for metroid, mario, and zelda....yup, guess I'm gonna have to empty the retirement account for these.

Unfortunately, the Revolution is not completely backwards compatible by hardware.

It plays Gamecube discs, but in order to play the NES, SNES and N64 classics, the games must be purchased (for a small fee) and downloaded onto the built-in 512 MB of memory, or on an SD Memory Card. One of my least favourite things about the Revolution, but I'm still really looking forward for it. Smash Bros. 3 says it all.

I guess that makes more sense then. Wouldnt have been necessary for me anyway, only one I dont have anymore is the N64. Got a nes off ebay few years back and still have snes from growing up. I'm just ready to see its capabilites and new games for it.

Re: The Next-Gen War has Begun!

The "backward" compatible-ism here is emulation.

The next gen systems all have enough raw power to go to nu64 level emulation with ease.

Since old systems are relatively simple to reverse engineer, not to mention Nintendo already knows their own systems inside out, it's relatively easy to be "backward" compatible.

Xbox and PS2 backward compatibilities are a little beyond the specs though, so it's quite hard for underground groups to do those. As not only do you have to program for compatiblity, but for speed as well, while the worse coded NES emulator will play great due to its low demand for cpu power.

But it's nothing new, as we know playing NES/SNES games on ps2/DC/Xbox was possible long ago.

I have to agree, the Rev's look is the best out of the 3. The 360 is much better than its predecessor but still looks like a monolith. Maybe I'm disappointed in the PS3's looks because I was expecting more from the top dog. It's a definate wait and see on the frickin controller though!! WTF!!? LOL

Which controller? I've seen the one for ps3...doesnt look comfortable, 360 contoller looks almost exactly like the ones now. No telling what nintendo is gonna do with this one...they always seem to come up with something real weird.

Seriously...the middle part looks fairly typical.....but the handles???? Its just retarded looking.
Also...on wireless controllers: Is it line of sight? I usually play console games on the couch or recliner and the controller has no way of seeing the base.

Really? the Rev looks like a toy to me. They still won't release the specs but form all indications nothing is going to stand out and was ment to be more like "light weight on the go, and affordable" thing.

PS3 is a "Welcome to the big boys, and we'll show you something you're not going to have elsewhere" idea. (PS3 gives you the "all your home entertainment needs at a no-interest till winter sale")

And Xbox is somewhere in the middle.

It's pretty obvious that there's really no way, unless you go rummaging through meteors for alien technology for something that small to even come close to the powers, of xbox360 or PS3.

Nah man. Wireless, aka, RF via Xbox and Bluetooth via PS3, are not affected by line-of-sight or even obstructions in the room. So even if you were controlling CDs over your stereo you connected to your PS3, you'd be able to change tracks from another room in the house.

I know this because I have the logitech controller for PS2, and I can start FFXI (when i put in the COP disk, I just press X for about 3 minutes, and I come to my room logged in and half the items out of my mog safe >.>;;; Helps when I want to make a sandwhich or use the bathroom and still log into FFIX)

So the answer to your question is no.
