    Famitsu magazine(a japanese gaming magazine) was the first to review FFXII.

    Final Fantasy XII got a 10 / 10 / 10 / 10
    A perfect score of 40 out of 40. Putting the name into game history...!

    The magazine has only give out all tens for 5 or so games including:
    Ocarina of Time, Vagrant Story, Soul Calibur, The Wind Waker
    Nintendogs.

    Each of the four reviewers praised the graphics, scenario and game system extensively, in particular the freshness that the latest entry has brought to the Final Fantasy series. Interestingly enough, this is the second time a Yasumi Matsuno game received a perfect score from Famitsu; he was also the director of the critically-acclaimed PlayStation epic, Vagrant Story. Although he's no longer being credited as the man in charge of Final Fantasy XII, his influence is still very obviously prevalent throughout the game.

      I'm not so optimistic. The demo could be set to practically play itself. And the resemblence to Star Wars is a little too obvious this time.

      Meh, I haven't trusted magazines in years.

            Yeah, pretty amazing.

            It is the most highly-anticipated Final Fantasy titles in a long time. I wonder how it'll sell.

                And yes, the game can be set to play itself, pretty much.

                But why would you do that?

                This time Active Mode makes a massive difference, and I really enjoyed having to work and think faster than a Final Fantasy game has ever made me. I really enjoy the new battle system, and like the reviewers at Famitsu said, the game brings an all-around freshness to the Final Fantasy series that was much needed.

                  Exactly. Really it's just like Grandia. If you're leveled well enough you can set your "Strategy" to auto and mow through exp mobs without even selecting anything yourself. But, it doesn't always choose optimum option, nor is it as fun as manually doing it all :D From what I've played and seen, it's like FFXI in that you just auto attack, then select when to do abilities/spells.

                  And amen on the freshness comment, it's so true.

                      You've never noticed all the references to and similarities between FF games and Star Wars? Well, for FFXII there is...

                      A "Sky Pirate" who prefers guns to swords.

                      His partner, a tall and furry "weapons master".

                      A princess who's lost everything and vowed vengeance on the "Empire".

                      A "traitor" who bears an odd resemblance to Obi-Wan.

                      A naive young man as the protagonist (this one's a stretch.)

                      Speeder bikes.

                      All the scenes of fanciful airships zooming around a metropolis, which seems to be protected by a force field.

                      There's more that'd be a real stretch, like how the approach to the apparently floating island in the trailer reminds me strongly of that floating city in Empire Strikes Back (I think it's that one.) You can see StarWars-iness going back to IV or even beyond, but it's the most overt this time.

                      For the battles... I usually play FF games on Active with the battle speed ramped up because I hate waiting. That's usually faster than the FFXII demo, but you can change the speed in the final version so it's moot for me, I think.

                      Turning the gambit off is... eh. RPGs usually give you an "I Win" button anyway. Orlandu, Erdekaiser, Vanish+Doom, etc. Gambit is just like that, except it's not doing anything you can't do without it. It's not gamebreaking, I'm just annoyed the option is there, that's all.

                      Edit: One small point about FFXII's combat. I've said it before, but I'm not sure if it's been said here. It's a bastard child of ATB and FFXI. The cast time of all spells and the delay of all weapons is exactly the same. Because casting in the middle of a swing resets the timer it prudent to wait for your current attack to complete before casting. The end result is that the game plays like ATB in reverse, you choose the ability and then the bar charges, with free movement for allies and enemies. (An yeah, this annoys me too. I was hoping for actual real time combat. :p)

                            Gambits are really fun to use. As someone somewhere else said "Its like coding characters in C++" :D

                                Yeah, gambits are really neat. I think it's stupid that you have to unlock more slots on the license board, though. And I can never use them on my main character... if I do, the game feels way too automated. @_@;

                                But what I'm really into is how customizable everything is- you can make any character anything you want them to be. Everyone can be black mages with guns, but then you'd probably die XD. You can also spend a lot of time acquiring LPs, and max out everything (white magic, black magic, gambit slots, abilities, weapon mastery, armor mastery, etc). I use setup 1 Gunner, 2 Sword & Shield people. I've got everyone knowing enough white magic to cast Cure II, so we're pretty much safe. Other two party members have their weapon mastery up all the way, practically, except for a few abilities (like the MP regain one)... and my my main character (Vaan) has a sort of balance in everything. Buffs, debuffs, black magic, white magic, and just enough weapon mastery to use the latests swords.

                                The game's great. ^^
