  • Thinking of switching back to Windows

I've been using Ubuntu for about 7 or 8 years now, but lately I've been having so many usability issues that I've thought of starting over on something else; and some software that I can't get running under WINE (usually, I almost never run WINE software anymore anyway, but new hobbies and whatnot) is making me think about Windows.

But here's the thing: other than occasionally helping friends with their computer issues, I've had pretty much no contact with Windows since well before Vista. I don't know what's changed, I don't know what programs I should be running (esp. AV and whatnot), I don't know the differences between the versions (Windows 8 looked annoying at first, and more interesting the more I see it), and generally where to get started. Luckily I have a healthy supply of external HDDs, so I don't need to worry about losing my stuff. Looking at the bottom of my laptop, apparently it came with Win7 Home Premium; I don't know what the significant differences between that and a cracked completely and totally legitimate copy of Win8 would be.

One of the big things that bothers me about Ubuntu is the poor support for Asian languages input; which of course matters when there's three of the bastards you need to be able to type in. Kylin seems to be a step in the right direction, but at the same time seems to prioritize the lunar calendar (which nobody under 40 gives a damn about anyway) over practical matters like input, font/character display, etc. The little work that has been put in seems to be aimed at Pinyin input, which I've only ever used under durress. Which leads to the question, do any of you know how good Windows support for Japanese/Korean/Chinese tends to be? From what I've seen on friend's computers, it looks far more stable and usable, probably because Microsoft actually needs to appeal to those markets to make money.

Basically, am I looking at a more usable experience if I switch back, and what programs are worth installing (both from a system maintainence perspective, and a "hey, this is some cool shit" perspective)? Is it worth finding Win8, or should I stick with the Win7 that came with my PC?

Stick with Win7. Win8 is more for tablets and computers with touchscreen functionality and the UI is very clearly designed for that purpose.

I can't offer any insight on the language support angle, but for anti-virus I would recommend Avast. It's what I use at home and at work when our corporate anti-virus doesn't cut it.

Win7 is pretty awesome. Screw Windows 8 and its horrible Metro UI.

All anti-viral software sucks, some just suck less than others. Avast is OK but you have to train it to not be intrusive during hours that you're actually trying to be productive. Kaspersky and Trend Micro are pretty good too.

Stay away from MacAfee. Horrible quality control on their updates (they've screwed up a couple of times and crashed user's Windows with their patches at least twice to my recollection). Symantec is decent but it's a resource hog and wants to wrap your PC in bubble wrap.

McAfee products are the worst, and not just their anti-virus stuff either.

Re: Thinking of switching back to Windows

As for apps, I'm a big fan of Launchy. There's no quicker way to open an application than using the keyboard. Chocolatey is nice for installing stuff.

I prefer not to run an antivirus. I don't find they're worth the performance hit. I prefer to treat my OS partition like something expendable and keep any important data (including the AppData folder) off of it so I can reinstall at a moment's notice if needed. It's definitely not for everyone, but it's an option. If you do use an antivirus, I second the notion that you should stay away from McAfee. I really liked Avast, it was pretty unintrusive.

Haven't tried Windows 8 so I can't comment on it.

Not running any anti-virus seems pretty risky to me. Even if you don't care about blowing away your OS/losing data, there's plenty of other reasons why you don't want to let things sneak in. It's not all folder corruption and blue screen crashes, there's plenty of stuff that's way more sinister and gets in quietly and just sets up shop if you don't have anything on look-out duty.

I use McAfee and have no problems. I think I remember an AV marketed specifically towards gamers, but I can't remember the name at the moment. I think the selling point was that it's lightweight and unobtrusive, so it would keep you safe without bogging your games down. I don't have any issues like that with McAfee, but if you're interested I can look the name up.

I really like Avast, it's not intrusive and actually isn't that resource hungry.

Could always run a scan weekly overnight. Regardless, it's definitely not for anyone. I spend most of my time on my Ubuntu partition so I rarely do anything on Windows except play certain games.

Fair enough, I just think the security concerns extend beyond just making sure a virus doesn't break your OS.

On that note I'm not opposed to having a firewall, which has a much simpler job than trying to inspect every single byte that passes through your hard drive, and will also instantly tip you off to any shady software trying to phone home.

I also use Avast and am quite happy with it. By default it will want to tell you about every little thing it does with a popup window and a voice message, but the extraneous alerts are trivial to disable.
