  • Buying a Mountain Bike

Was considering buying a new bike. Just wanted one to get to work every morning when it's nice out, but somebody recommended I get a mountain bike since those are better built to last. And that I start online as oppose to going to any old bike shop. So anyone know any nice online biking stores?

    Re: Buying a Mountain Bike

If I'm honest a road bike would be a better investment, they are much lighter and have thinner tyres so there's a lot less resistance from the road and have a lot more gear combinations that a mountain bike would typically have to cope with different kinds of road inclines and speeds you wish to travel at.

Mountains bikes are more rugged but if I'm honest the only times I find myself preferring it is when I'm going to by cycling off paved roads (so basically not when cycling to work). They have fewer gears and the wider tyres and fewer gear combinations make it more of an effort to get up to speed. I live in an area of the UK with roughly the same geography as San Francisco and still find a Road Bike more useful because I'm going up very steep inclines as often as I'm going down them.

I would look online though to start purely because it might also help you find some good bike shops in your local area. I'm not familiar with US bike shops though.
