    Re: Message From the Queen

Seriously, what kind of barbarian can't use a teacup without dribbling down the side?

I predict the US will start using a measuring system that makes sense around the same time that 46% of us start believing the earth is more than 10,000 years old.

Fine. I'll absorb the metric system. I'm going to grumble about it but I'll accept the change.

Seriously, the metric system takes like 30 seconds to learn. There's none of this memorizing random numbers like 5280 feet to a mile, and 16 ounces to a pound, but only 8 fluid ounces in a cup. Meters in a kilometer? 1000. Milliliters in a liter? 1000. Grams in a kilogram? 1000. You don't even have to learn hecto/deka/deci/centi if you don't want to. Kilo and milli do everything an average person ever has to care about.

        P.S. Seriously.

Doesn't really make a difference either way. No letter in the English language - either variant - makes any sense. The whole vocabulary is based on memorization since there's no way to tell how anything is pronounced just by looking at it and there's five ways to pronounce any given vowel.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, you all have a stupid language. There's only one way to interpret words in Spanish (and presumably other Latin-derived languages.)

Since I've been baking, Us measurements have become a major stress.

Cups and sticks to me aren't measurements. Also the names of ingredients that are different it's a major pain, There's so many recipe's I've found and would love to try but the measurements put me off, I used a converting website and the results were horrific, I had a cake expand so much I expected it to push the oven door open to escape.

We only have ourselves to blame sending people off on a boat with only a part written dictionary, One thing is for sure that the American education system is miles better than ours. Even using this forum as an example the people from the Us use punctuation and grammar correctly and their use of words runs rings around us.
              It's a quality I wish I had myself.
I look at 90% of people on my facebook and wonder if they are retarded, Even more so when at school they were in the classes that scored higher than myself.
the other 10%are my american friends who's posts are a pleasure to read in comparision even when it's just "I've just bought some bread LOL "
You'd be suprised how badly people in the Uk can screw up such a simple sentance.

Saying that, Given the chance I'd be off to America in a heartbeat the men are so much better looking, Even the supposedly ugly ones.
The standard of oral hygiene is better too.
I went through a phase where I was considering applying to work in the Us as a nurse.

I know. I wish our language wasn't so stupid.

It's just a horrible ball of exceptions rather than any concrete rules. It bothers me quite a bit.

Beats pronouncing "St. John" as sinjin and "Worchestershire" as worster. Seriously, what the fuck.

That's just what I mean. English is ridiculous and some American bastardizations actually eliminate some of the nonsense. Like the adspeak spelling of "lite." It makes sense. It follows the same format as the word "like." There's a long 'I' sound in the middle as indicated by the 'e' at the end of the word. "Light" sounds like it should have the same root as "ligature." Even the common internet misspelling of the word "lose" (which drives me mad) at least has some sense behind it. There's clearly an "oo" sound in the middle of the word.

Words should be spelled the way they're supposed to sound. They should have no more or less letters than come out of your mouth when you say them. So Queen's English, to me, is like the opposite kind of stupidity from txt tlk.

French, it should be noted, is at least as dumb. "Versailles" has twice as many letters as necessary.

This, but it would be a hell of an adjustment to going 80 in a zone that used to be 50, even knowing that the systems are totally different from each other. When I was stationed in Germany it used to trip me up when people said they were going 180, then I'd do the math and was much less impressed.

You should specify the type of tea too Jarre. I once ordered tea in Florida, and was given a cup of ice with some kind of red colouring, and enough sugar in it to put the average person into a diabetic coma.

Yeah, in the south the most common type of tea is "sweet" and they aren't kidding around. You can usually find unsweetened as well, or if there are sugar packets on the table, they'll probably bring it to you that way, but if you want to be sure you better specify. In any case, you're probably being served iced Lipton, which may not meet the standards of a person who actually has a palette for tea.
