Disney buys Lucasfilms for 4Billion. Episode 7 on the horrizon.
Re: Disney buys Lucasfilms for 4Billion. Episode 7 on the horrizon.
Star Trek does tend to get more meme fodder than Star Wars, but having multiple TV series with likable characters probably helps with that. But then TV has been its strength and Star wars' blockbuster nature makes the TV thing a mixed bag. Strong characters, not dazzling special effects, are what helps a TV series. I'm hoping Star Trek doesn't stay relegated to the big screen forever. The new movie series carries the strength of character well (well, maybe not Chekov and Sulu so much, but there's room to improve that in the next film).
In fact, if they keep the New Old Star Trek to the big screen and explore the post-TNG universe as affected by Nero, I think that would be awesome. The MMO is kind of there but its an MMO.
Seems right now the current plan is to stick with this new alternate universe they rebooted with, though. There's an animated series planned that also will be set in the alternate universe.
It's also the only Sci-Fi universe in recent memory at least, where humanity isn't a complete bag of shit. Pretty much every other universe we are the most aggressive, low-life SOBs out there, particularly in Halo but especially War Hammer.
You do realise two things about Warhammer right?
Every single faction in the game is either evil (Chaos, Orcs and Goblins, Ogres, Dark Elves, Empire, Skaven) or Neutral at best (Dwarves, High Elves, Wood Elves, Lizardmen, Tomb Kings, maybe Bretonnians)
It's black humour and a parody of settings getting bleak and dark
Same with 40k too except that none of the factions are even remotely sympathetic except for maybe the Eldar (Who are more dicks then evil) and pre 5th Edition Necrons (Who are more this trope, until Games Worshop decided to ruin them in 5th Edition by turning them into the Scourge...IN SPACE!)
Also as for a list of Sci-Fi Universes in the last 10 years or so where the majority of humanity aren't dicks?
Scrapped Princess
Gurran Lagann
Suzymiya Haruhi Series (Yuki is actually the only unambiguously good alien in the whole setting)
Rebuild of Evengelion (Okay Gendou and SEELE are still dicks but still...)
Red Dwarf (yes I'm counting it due to the new series)
Doctor Who (If we can count Red Dwarf)
The Star Wars franchise does have a pretty level "Saint-to-Arsehole balance" for all races so that counts.
Half-Life
Star Trek
Darker Than Black (there are very few evil non-contractors)
Mal, whatever you thought of George Lucas, please don't lump him in with SW. SW could've fared better, yes, but it's still far from the piling steam of crap you're making it out to be.
Being the creator and owner of it (until just recently) that's a rather hard separation. The only really semi-decent, enjoyable thing SW has put out in recent years has been the Clone Wars animated series. But even then, I just look at the Jedi with complete disdain now.
Ever since the last trilogy I've just been completely soured on it, with Halo and Mass Effect holding up my interests much better. I kinda liked the little bit of the last season of Star Trek that I saw (as opposed to the really corny crap Shatner did) but even that was sorta "meh".
And Anakin killed them all off-screen, doesn't count
George Lucas: I'm giving 80% of the money to the Make a Wish foundation. This money is to be used EXCLUSIVELY to fund construction costs for a Deathstar... in an effort to see little George's... err... Timmy's dream come true.

The movie couldn't have been made possible without the actors, actresses and the talented people over at ILM. I don't think you get what I'm saying here...
