"Mana burn". You keep using that term, but I don't think it means what you think it means.

"Mana burn" was a rule that existed before the Magic 2010 Core Set (and thus a rule I never played with) that stated that if you had unspent mana as your mana pool emptied out between phases, you would take damage equal to the total (colorless) value of the unspent mana. Turns out that keeping mana burn around was too problematic a design choice to bother with, so they decided to ditch it (conveniently enough, in the set before the set that introduced the likes of Lotus Cobra and Sorin Markov).

What I believe you are thinking about is more commonly referred to as "land destruction," which is, in fact, quite a brutal and unfun tactic to be on the receiving end of, if the tactic is allowed to run rampant. Thusly, it is frowned upon in excess, and especially early-game. Nicol Bolas (Planeswalker) is indeed a ridiculously powerful force to go up against, but that's why he costs a whopping 8 mana to cost, four of them in a somewhat awkward tri-color arrangement, and none of them being Green. By the time an opponent is able to even cast Bolas, you either have too many lands for nuking one of them to make a worthwhile difference (as opposed to, say, diffusing/STEALING your 6/7-mana bomb), or you've already lost to mana screw a long time ago, anyway.

      Re: Magic: The Gathering

Oh. I forgot all about the old mana burn. I was thinking of Land Destruction. Sorry, but both are in a sense associated with your mana which is where I got confused. No harm. No foul. But the only real counter I'd say to land destruction would be Indestructible, but even then Universal shit like Armageddon will override that and I don't even think shroud/hexproof can stop Universal last I checked. The person I faced used a Nicol Bolas deck and stomped me. He rubbed salt in the wound and I didn't enjoy it. Which is why anytime someone I see running Nicol Bolas, I automatically go for the OTK Poison Counter strategy which is easy enough to do.

The best counter to land destruction is to have a better mana curve.

How I roll in D&D is pretty much the exact opposite of how I roll in MtG.

I run four of these in my deck, that should pretty much tell you all you need to know:

Since I don't really play Magic, that means nothing to me. Let's see. Can you equate that card to what would happen if a similar move was made in our D&D session? Maybe then I can see the significance.

Let's say you were fighting near a road where ye old bus was driving by, and you threw one of your party members under the bus to cause it to swerve and run over the enemy party. There you go.

That's much better than the example I was going to give. It also characterizes exactly how I play my goblin deck, except that sometimes the bus ends up running over a third party that was completely uninvolved.

I think we actually did this with Lyulf, didn't we? If we didn't I know we talked about doing something of the sort... lol.

I'm not sure what is worse.

The new Liliana or the old Jace. Her new effect just pretty much fucks your entire deck over. Well unless your running a straight burn deck, then you'll be fine. But if your creature reliant, kiss that game goodbye for the match.

                        -1 - Return Target Creature to it's owner's hand
-12 - Exile all cards from target player's library, then that player shuffles his or her hand into his or her library.
