The point of bringing up the old Niv-Mizzet, and I clarify this only because I didn't get it at first, is that he is completely degenerate with Curiosity, unlike the new one. He basically gets to deal damage equal to the number of cards in your library.

I edited my post, because I had written something after the quote but the forum just spazed out on me when I went to post it.

Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius is funny to me, because he already comes with a Curiosity effect. So, in order to break him, you need to give him an effect that says something like, say, "whenever you draw a card, this creature deals some damage to target player."

Good, sweet, one eyed, one horned, flying, purple Jesus... what in the fuck is going on in this thread?!

Melody: I have a solution for you that might make everyone happy. Accept constructive criticism. Accept it... and don't just combat it with this whole "I know what I'm doing, guys... relax" mentality. No offense, but watching you feign superiority in certain things is like watching a train wreck.

Learn to accept criticism and you'll no longer have to accept "defeat". You take things far too personally.

It began a long time ago, but it probably isn't going to continue here. She's pointedly said she's not reading this thread anymore more than once. I may be naive for taking her at her word. I think that's been well-established about me. Seriously though, she needs to grow a thicker skin.

Izzet storytime? Why yes, it is.

Now keep in mind the entire collection I'm working off of atm is a Depths of Power intro pack and whatever I brought home from the prerelease, so I'm not playing with the best cards. I've got one deck, a UR which I've just decided I'm going to start calling Trixie.

So the other day I'm playing Trixie against my son's Selesnya deck which he's augmented with some of the more synergistic cards from the Path to Victory intro pack his grandparents got him (Odric, Master Tactician, Attended Knight, Captain's Call, Crusader of Odric), and I am just not getting the draws I need to keep up with the threats he's presenting. I finally managed to stabilize with a Fog Bank and a couple of small creatures holding the ground, but he's whittled me down to 1 while he's at 23 from an early Centaur Healer. Meanwhile on his side of the table he's got a Concordia Pegasus with a +1/+1 counter on it and a Towering Indirik which are stopping my 2/2 Drakes from getting through, and a small army of miscellaneous tokens that are threatening to take me out if I tap a single potential blocker. All I've got in my hand are a Rewind and two Archaeomancers with no useful targets in the graveyard.

Then I draw into Switcheroo. It begins.

Immediately I play Switcheroo trading my Augur of Bolas for his Towering Indirik, removing a defender, and pass the turn. He swings in with his 2/4 Pegasus, I block with the Indirik instead of the Fog Bank for some reason, he Savage Surges his creature and kills mine. Fine. Next turn Archaeomancer, returning Switcheroo to my hand. Go. He draws nothing of note, but still can't gainfully attack because of the Fog Bank and passes. This turn I Switcheroo trading the Archaeomancer for the Pegasus. That's his last aerial defender so I can start coming across with my drakes. 4 damage, go. This turn he draws and plays Crusader of Odric. Bad move, as it turns out. Next turn I play—you guessed it—Archaeomancer returning Switcheroo to my hand. You see where this is going. My next turn I steal Crusader of Odric, and all his threats turn into emergency chump blockers. It finally comes through for damage on the final attack, by which point it's 10/10. Game. I love it when a plan comes together.

Another story: shorter with a similar trick. This time it's my wife playing Trixie. She puts a Mindclaw Shaman on the table and manages to steal a Common Bond, giving her a 4/4 Win Drake. Not bad. Next turn my son pulls Horncaller's Chant and, because he has a big mouth, loudly expresses his elation that THAT card wasn't in his hand when she played the Shaman. I note that there's only one Mindclaw in the deck ... although she could Unsummon it to use it again ... there's only one Unsummon in the deck, too, though. (I love the new flavor text on that, btw.) Her next draw: Unsummon. Plays an island, picks the Shaman up, puts it back down, and gains two 4/4 Rhino tokens. Next turn she's able to overload Teleportal and come across for an even 20 unblockable damage. Now she's thinking about starting her own collection. Magic: 3, Bank Account: -∞

So my local furry group convinced me to download Cockatrice.

Actually, let me back up to a couple of days before that.

So I may or may not have just bought the cards I need for a Standard deck online last Friday, but only because I was able to do so for under $25. The genius in the deck is how obvious it is in any other format, but how nobody's going to see it coming in the context of Return to Ravnica Standard. The deck that I intend to mess around with is Mono-White Soldiers.

For what is very much a budget deck (I cut out the three Thalias from the first blueprint because she cost $4.85 a piece), I have to say that I'm quite pleased with how it looks. Of course, I was interested in seeing how it would actually perform, so my local furry group convinced me to download Cockatrice.

After getting used to the interface with my friends, I started playing some strangers in Standard today, to get a better feel for how the deck handles what's strong in the meta, and honestly? I have to say that I'm very satisfied, especially for what the deck cost.

I'm definitely going to be using it for the Return to Ravnica Game Day event, and I might loan it to my friends interested in playing FNM, since attending FNM personally would still be a pretty hefty investment for me. I'm quite excited!

Over the weekend my friend suggested I try out cockatrice so we could get back into playing Magic on a regular basis, so I might be hopping on that train in the near future.

                        I really miss deckbuilding.

                            Eh? Where?

Also cid, I totally feel you on the deckbuilding crave. Which, in my case, is divided between two TCGs (including the one I dev for; PM me if you're going to ask), though that doesn't really make it any better or any worse.
