  • Re: Magic: The Gathering

So I went to the pre-release this past weekend. It was kind of fun, but the new set really doesn't do anything for me. There were some interesting mechanics on display, but nothing I'd expect to see again and it was pretty tame overall. The flavor doesn't really sit well with me. Greek mythology has been done to death and incorporating it into MtG doesn't really breath any life into it, so all I could think about was how much I missed proper Magic sets with goblins and other cool stuff that you don't see elsewhere.

It feels like they're running out of good ideas.

Yeah the early previews showed a lot of promise, but when the full spoiler was released it was just more disappointment.

Tribute is a great mechanic horribly implemented for the most part, just like bestow. Inspired has potential, but is lacking good ways to abuse it atm (like icy manipulator) other than maybe Hands of Binding, and ravnica is rotating out next. The new Gods aren't bad, though Ephara is like "lolwut?"

I'm kind of surprised that anyone, even the most diehard Goblin fan, misses Goblins. If you want to talk about something that's been done to death and back again in MTG . . .

Anyway I like that White doesn't suck in the new set, but given that half the prerelease box was still Theros boosters I was still driven to again go Green. Low-key as the event was, it was still a success for all intents and purposes.

Unfortunately, fun as the event was, ever since the LGS closed down (on my birthday last November, to add salt to the wound), the closest one holding an event was 20 miles away, and alas, my current financial situation prevents me from making it back there on release day . . .

TBH I'm pretty sick of any Goblin that isn't either a Boros Legionnaire or an Izzet League member.

You are everything that is wrong with modern Magic if you can't see the overwhelming appeal of cards like Goblin Spy.

                  . . . who, in turn, was a knock-off of Orcish Spy.

I'd re-examine who's everything wrong with Modern Magic if you can't see how much creative space Goblins have stolen from other potential Red tribes, for starters. Just Goblins ad nauseum gets boring.

Goblins are the essence of Red distilled into its purest form.

And they exist in every color. I could make the same statement about Elementals and make just as much sense. Your point?

My point is that Goblins are fun, so I'm disappointed when they don't make an appearance. Is it so wrong to want the game to be fun?
