Depends on what he has really. Some of the older cards are too cool to sell on really. I have an original 1999 Base Set Foil Charizard (I don't think it's 1st Edition but it definitely is not Base 2) that I could sell on for a good price today and get cash in hand by calling one of 3-4 numbers.
But frankly...I just don't want to because it's just so awesome and gets people talking about it whenever I get together with friends to game or go to play at a local gaming place. It's something cool to look at and let your friends look at.
And it does sound like a lot of cards to sort through and find the prices for and eventually sell on. Still there very well be something really nice in there.

Check the border, if there's no shadow you've got a second edition one(not to be confused with Base Set 2). The third printing and everything afterwards has a shadow around the picture frame.
God I played that game way too much and for far too long. I made it all the way to the first set that had Pokemon from Gold and Silver before I finally stopped playing.
Here we go, click to zoom. It has a shadow but is from the original Base Set so third printing I think? It's not one of the stupid valuable ones (I knew that anyway) but it's still a cool card to bring out to show people.
All my other rares are either played and/or weren't worth much to begin with (same with my MTG collection since I sold my valuable cards long ago). Still, a quick Google check reveals that it is a $50-70 card which isn't bad at all considering that is about how much my friends will offer me for it anyway XD
Really? I didn't realize its value had actually held up that well over the years. It might be time to go through and price my collection. Except not really because I can't see myself actually selling my cards. There's too much sentimental attachment for that to happen.
Yeah you would have to offer me something retardedly high for me to consider parting with that Charizard. It is definitely something I consider too awesome to sell.
Well then. I just typed out a ton of shit about my Magic card acquisition today and then the internet decided to flicker out and I lost everything I typed. Nice.
I guess I'll just do the tl;dr version.
8000 cards in total. Box was a mess and nothing was in any order. I spent 4 hours organizing it by color/edition/rarity. No Alphas, Betas or Power 9. 50% of the box was Kamigawa block (made me lol). Pricing the good cards out now. Will report later.
