    re: Magic: The Gathering

Multicolor and artifact blocks are always more fun than tribal blocks, imo.

      re: Magic: The Gathering

Thanked you for the multicolor block fact.

Removed it for the artifact block lie.

I started playing Zendikar block (Alara/Zendikar Standard), so I have a soft spot for Zendikar's Land mechanics. I even still have the remnants of the Cradle of Vitality Ally Lifegain deck I played sitting on my desk, with cards like Path to Exile, Oblivion Ring, and Knight of the White Orchid fittingly harvested for other purposes. It seldom won (crap, it hardly even did anything until turn 4), but it was fun when I got to surprise my opponent by dropping Sanguine Bond or Splinter Twin via Khalni Gem (the actual land base was White-splash Green).

        re: Magic: The Gathering

I'm not sure if I can really afford to be spending cash on virtual cards every month for a draft, especially since if the prices aren't normalised across all regions, I'm going to get gouged when contributing boosters to the draft.

Oh I would definitely be interesting in playing MTG:O and/or DoTP/DoTP12/DoTP13 with people, especially if we can all get on Skype. It's just I might not be able to do drafts every month that's all.

                re: Magic: The Gathering

I'd be interested in playing DotP or DotP12 sometime with a non-stranger human being.

I've got the Magic Online client installed now, and as expected I cannot remember my password from beta. Also I cannot use the password recovery tool because it requires answering a security question and my account that predates security questions throws it for a loop. XD So I'll be emailing support now because there's no way in hell I'm giving up the username Taskmage on an M:tG product if I can help it.

[09:05] Yygdrasil: I have to sign up for mtg today
                    [09:05] Yygdrasil: 9.99 fee
[09:06] Yygdrasil: is that a 1 time shot?
                    [09:06] Yygdrasil: or monthly?
[09:06] Taskmage: orly? Just to make an account?
                    [09:06] Yygdrasil: yeah
[09:06] Yygdrasil: 9.99 to sign up. im not sure if its a monthly fee or not
[09:06] Taskmage: Must be one time. Hooking you with pack costs AND a subscrption would be stupid.
[09:09] Yygdrasil: there's a big "sign in" package
[09:09] Yygdrasil: a few boosters... a starter deck... some other stuff... a planeswalker I think
                    [09:10] Yygdrasil: unlimited lands obviously
[09:10] Taskmage: Lemme take a look. Apparently the Taskmage account isn't mine anymroe, but I haven't looked into making a new one yet.
[09:10] Yygdrasil: client is free. account creation is $10
[09:11] Yygdrasil: im willing to take the bullet
[09:12] Yygdrasil: what do you think a draft will run us if we get 6 people?
[09:12] Yygdrasil: I haven't looked at booster prices for online yet
[09:12] Yygdrasil: must be cheaper than rl
                    [09:12] Yygdrasil: $2 maybe?
                    [09:12] Yygdrasil: $3?
                    [09:13] Taskmage: Yeah, idk.
                    [09:13] Yygdrasil: research time today
[09:13] Taskmage: Lemme hit the free trial button and see what I can see.
                    [09:13] Yygdrasil: k
                    [09:14] Taskmage: Client's kinda slow.
[09:15] Taskmage: I bet they're the same as real packs.
                    [09:17] Taskmage: Boosters are $3.99
[09:19] Taskmage: Getting in a ranked draft also costs event tickets. idk if you can do casual drafts with people you pick. I thought you could. Looking into it.
[09:23] Taskmage: Ok, it looks like you can do casual drafts with people on your buddy list but it probably takes 8 people to make a pod.
[09:23] Taskmage: Oh NEVER MIND you can't.
[09:24] Taskmage: It looks like the "casual drafts" option is only for prereleases and stuff. Same as the ranked with queueing and random selection, but just unranked.
[09:25] Taskmage: oh and no prize packs
[09:27] Taskmage: Yeah, we can not do the thing you want to do with this.
                    [09:36] Yygdrasil: bullshit to that
                    [09:36] Yygdrasil: fuck you wotc
                    [09:36] Yygdrasil: brb
                    [09:37] Taskmage: Yup. Lame.
                    [09:53] Yygdrasil: super lame
[09:53] Yygdrasil: know what's not lame?
[09:54] Yygdrasil: this tasty coffee beverage
                    [09:55] Yygdrasil: yum yum
[09:55] Yygdrasil: im still down to sign up and casually play if you are
[09:56] Yygdrasil: I only have the funds to buy like... a booster or 2 a Month tho
[11:21] Taskmage: Eh, I don't think it's worth the buy-in to duel sometimes with one person I know and our crap decks.
                    [11:21] Yygdrasil: lol
[11:21] Yygdrasil: no worries. scrap the idea

Well, one benefit of actual cards. Playing Magic with people. But within an extremely limited context, apparently.

Really though, the value is completely arbitrary for both real cards and digital cards.

                            re: Magic: The Gathering

I almost never buy boosters. Back when I played regularly I would buy a starter box for a new block... as i did with Shards of Alara... and get a good base of cards to work with. Then I would always go to the comic shop and hand-select the cards I still needed/wanted for the deck I planned to build. To me it was better spend $25.00-$30.00 and build exactly what I wanted than to end up paying $32.00 and get 8 rares I didn't need and MAYBE all the commons and uncommons I needed.

That being said... drafts were a whole different creature. At least there, I was using my knowledge of the set against the knowledge of the other players and constructing a deck from what meager resources I got dealt in the pass-around. Also... rewards.

I typically do well in drafts... besides that one time a guy got dealt Jace (planeswalker) in his opening booster and build his whole draft around a Blue/Artifact deck. Who else was building a Blue/Artifact? This guy. 2 people going after the same 2 types made for us each getting a raw deal... but at least he had Jace. I remember the guy who won used a Green/White mini with all kinds of enchantments. None of us stood a chance since nobody was grabbing up either his colors.

So if this is off, who here owns the DoTP games? I have all 3 on Steam.

EDIT: Also it turns out that I can pay in US Dollars like with D&D Insider so I shouldn't have worried about international pricing after all.

I would want to play, but my Nerdism is underleveled and I feel like I'd be at a disadvantage. I played Magic growing up with my sister and we had a blast. I don't think we really played 100% by the rules though...
