Cockatrice is basically for people who already know how to play and are willing to learn a new interface to do so. It's a good piece of software, but it's not where I would direct someone who's learning to play for the first time.

You're probably better off getting your feet wet in the new planewalker mumbo jumbo, although I still advocate the old PC game demo from the 1990s as a solid option with its 5 starter decks for learning how everything works. Those five decks ran you through a whole mess of color flavor and just about every basic mechanic you'd need to know to be on even footing with veteran players.

I respect your resolve... but this is a terrible idea. You have an extremely low threshold of annoyance tollerance... and this game puts to the test even the strongest of willpowers.

That being said, give it a shot... but this isn't a game you can just pick up and run with. You're going to be utterly swamped with rules/cards/designs and combinations.

      Good luck, kid.

"No way. Yyg made a deck with an unconventional and annoying win condition? You don't say..."

It's true. Back before they fucked with the mechanic of "the stack" I used to play cards that "tap target land" or "tap target perminent" or "destroy target land". My reasoning was that if they paid for something like "xyz creature for 3G" or worse yet... a timmy card for 8 or 9+... and tapped themselves out, I'd kill a land, countering the card and manaburning them for whatever the difference was... that is unless they had something else they could play in their hand. It was very effective... albeit very annoying... and made me a lot of enemies. To make sure I always had the advantage, I played counters and discard cards as well. The deck was B/U.

I'll see if I can recreate it and play with you guys using manaburn rules to prove my point.
I'm pretty sure the rules never worked like that. Twiddle does not counter spells. Unless it's some weird alpha/beta/unlimited rules remnant. In any case, it's impossible to tap or destroy an opponent's land before they can get mana from it. The best you can do is try to tap it during their upkeep, so if they do tap it for mana it'll get cleaned out of their pool before they can cast creatures or sorceries.

it seems my old highschool rules were wrong and that I took advantage of a rule that never existed. I just looked up the ruling on that trick I was talking about. Turns out its not real after-all.

Regardless... I built a control deck that should prove to be annoying as all hell anyway.

Yyg makes up rules as he goes? Yeah, he'd beat me then.

I see a MtG for sale on PS3. Anyone played that? I could learn from that, yes? Think that's a downloadable game from the PS3? If it's worth a shit I could try that out if it's fun.

Crap that could help teach me the game, or just crap? I'd be willing to try playing crap if it can teach me and if it's downloadable from the ps3 store.

What is it called? If it's Magic the Gathering - Tactics then it's just crap crap. If it's Duels of the Planeswalkers then it should be relatively cheap and be able to teach you the game.

The planeswalker game makes you pay for it. Tactics is free but complete garbage that won't teach you jack shit.

I took the liberty of digging up the CD I had that old Magic game burned to(jesus this thing is ancient). Dick around with it and learn some basics before you start dropping money: FileSend - Magic the Gathering.zip

I still can't believe that thing actually runs without any issues on this machine. Usually stuff that old has to be tweaked all to hell and back to get it to run on modern machines.

To be honest, as much as I hate educating someone new to the game, your best bet is to just load up Cockatrice, watch us for a few games and learn what we do and why. Once you get a feel for that, go on to Gatherer.com and check out the card lists there, build something you think will work and then play against us with it.

We can dumb down our decks until you find your groove. THeres no better way to learn than to just drop youself into it and let the people you're playing with explain the rules as they happen.

It'll take a while but eventually you'll know how to build your own decks.

                        Regardless... it won't happen overnight.

What cid just sent is just as good an option. Probably better.

It's the planeswalker game for the PS3. I don't mind paying for it, but i think I would like to sit in on a game. I'll check on skype and see when you're one. I think it would be entertaining and educational as I drink some beer and smoke a cigar on the back porch one night.
