  • Melody's Mechanical Problem - CPU Spiking Issue?

Ok, I know this isn't like a Microsoft Computer related forum, but I know some of you are computer smart. I have a terrible computer but it's not so terrible to where it begins to plant random processes on my computer. So I was wondering why it was crashing today and I looked at the Task Manager. To see a weird process called Defrager.exe - So I did the smart thing, right clicked on it and went to Open File Location. It took me to Windows > Temp

I had a bunch of temporary files, which then I looked them over and got rid of them. It seemed to help. Now about 10 minutes later Defrager.exe came back and was serving it's revenge colder than a dead person. It started a process on my CPU and sent it spiking up to 100% the process itself was running around 210k and the CPU it was eating up was about 30-60 range! My CPU had dropped from a mere 3% and spiked back up to 100% in a matter of seconds. I went back into my task manager and went to End Process, which worked and sent my CPU back down. But once again it was like the thing had casted Raise III on itself and came back a THIRD time. This time I tried deleting the temp folder and got "Access Denied". x_x Can someone please help me with this or will my CPU be melted down?

Fuck that, get Avast. Free anti-virus and it's done a good job of keeping my machine clean.

If you didn't initiate or schedule your machine to run a defragmenting program this is likely a virus. Or at least that's what my half-assed research seems to be pointing to.

There are certain types of Malware that do do nasty things to your CPU's fan. I have a list of free security applications and also a bunch of Utility Apps (because as a career White Mage I like being helpful) that you really shouldn't be without due to how useful and resource light they are:

          Security Stuff

avast! Free Antivirus | Download Antivirus Protection Software
Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download
KeePass Password Safe - Thanks to Armando for this. This is awesome for generating passwords and keeping a secure database of them
Windows 7's Firewall is good enough for general use but if you want to use another one then I like using Comodo

          Maintenance Stuff

CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download - This can also fix registry errors too
          Bvckup
Eraser - For when you just have to nuke something that is on your HD

          Utility Stuff

https://www.dropbox.com/ - Pretty simple to use cloud storage system. This thing is awesome for if you have multiple computers and you want to keep certain documents synced on both. It's also pretty nice for families too, I have one set up at home for family photos (And mostly because I'm too lazy to check Facebook).
Notepad++ Home - You can probably skip this if you don't do much XML editing
7-Zip - Because the winrar pop up is fucking annoying

          Other Stuff

Apache OpenOffice - The Free and Open Productivity Suite - Because you're an idiot if you actually bought Microsoft Office when this is the exact same thing, is open source and is compatible with OSX and Linux documents so you never have to worry about getting something in the wrong format every again.
VideoLAN - VLC: Official site - Free multimedia solutions for all OS! - You can pretty much throw any file type at it and it will play it. Even ones with extensions you blatantly made up.
Best PDF Reader - I love this for making .pdf files. I actually use it a lot for making CHaracter Sheets for role playing games.
Pidgin, the universal chat client - Unfortunately it doesn't support Skype yet.
FastStone Image Viewer - Powerful and Intuitive Photo Viewer, Editor and Batch Converter - For people who can't/don't want to crack a copy of Photoshop or don't want to or can't afford to buy it purely for photo editing

Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

            Free

CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

            Free

Windows has its own Firewall. Learn to make the most out of it. Not very many people are educated enough to know that it is a very powerful tool and can be made even more powerful given the right tutorials and settings.

Lock-down your wi-fi. Secure your home network. Don't take any chances. If you think that no one could possibly be able to exploit "X", they've already exploited "X".

I forgot to include Security Essentials actually. I wouldn't call Windows Firewall "foolproof" but there isn't much that needs tweaking and TBH it's good enough anyway. Using another Firewall programme does give you the advantage of having more control over firewall settings though.

Lock-down your wi-fi. Secure your home network.
Also note that WEP doesn't count as secure. It can be cracked regardless of the strength of your password. And if you didn't change the router's username/password, you've pretty much handed over your network on a silver platter.

WPA2 + strong password + change router login info or GTFO.

It's also why owning a Nintendo DS is actually a security risk given that it only supports WEP.
