  • Is the proper term Headphones or Headset? Anyway, I need'em! Help!

So I'm looking to get me a pair of the above. TV screen speakers suck for my Xbox and it would also benefit my PC adventures.

I heard mixed reviews about Turtle Beaches. Either they're the most awesome things ever or that there's too much interference/crackle/snap/pop. Apparently the latest craze are the X41's. Then there's the ASTRO, though I hear they're only worth it paired with the Mixamp Pro something or other.

Realistically, I'm looking to only spend $100 maximum. The above past that but I'm sure there's a deal somewhere out there. Not to mention, I don't mind them being wired since there's no way anyone can trip on them and it has the added benefit of being cheaper and no interference.

So who has experience with them?! Anyone of you own a pair of surround-sound headsets; speak up!

Headset is the one that usually includes a Mic.

    Headphones are just that, Headphones.

If possible I'd suggest installing the mic separately from the Headphones, but many people dislike that and/or have systems that only accept the mic as part of a set since they have no independent jack for them.

As for a nice set to get started on audio above 44khz I'd recommend cheap Headphones like the Sony MDR-SA1000 they go up to 80khz (in practice 96khz) and cost around 90 bucks depending on the seller. But you'd need to buy and install a mic separately.

Turtle Beach and Tritton are both good for PC headsets, and some of the higher end models allow the mic to be detached from the unit. If you have been hearing really mixed reviews on TB though, try Tritton.

      Try these:

Tritton Technologies - Stereo Gaming Headset for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and Mac/Windows - AX180

I'm no audiophile, but I've run through a few headsets, ranging from a really shady $5 one to these things: SteelSeries - Gaming Headsets - SteelSeries Siberia V2

They're not bad. The sound quality is decent enough and as far as I can tell the mic is good quality. The head strap is a bit loose though, it could use a stronger elastic or whatever it is they use in it to make it pull against your head. It often feels like it wouldn't take too much to make it slide off if I were running around. Basically it's not a headset I would use with my iPod while going out jogging or whatever, but it works well for stationary gaming. One thing it's really got going for it is that it doesn't get painful after a few hours of wear like some of the other headsets I've tried. Your mileage may vary. I'd try to find a pair in a store so you can try 'em on before making a purchase.

Like Ray said, Headphones are just that. A headset included a mic and possibly other features like the HUD and aim control you see in military grade helecopter pilot headsets.

And I love my Turtle Beach headset. I got a pair of 360 ones to use on my PC and love it. Easily the best thing about them is the built in monitor so you can easily tell if you're yelling or not and keeping everyone awake at night with your voice.
