Now please refer to the image below and go back to my previous post.
And, again: What exactly is the complaint? That it looks like ice cream? That it looks like candy? That the design is too simple? That it's stupid? What?

I have mixed feelings on the subject. I definitely interact with people differently in the digital world than I do in the physical world.

Certainly. Body language and facial cues are lost in voice-only communication, and auditory cues are lost in text-only communication. Plus, text communication is usually more premeditated because you have a chance to revise your ideas before pushing out the entire thought, and there isn't an expectation of an immediate response. All of that impacts communication. But as long as some form of communication is possible, shouldn't some level of friendship also be possible?

The concept of pen pals has existed as long as people have been delivering written messages.

Certainly it's possible and real. It's just that every time this subject comes up it makes me acutely aware of the differences in how I interact with people in real life and how it's very different online. It weirds me out if I stop to analyze it extensively. I am not an outgoing person by nature, but in a digital world I find I'm quite a bit more open with others, which then stirs up feelings of guilt over whether or not I ought to be more open and engaging with the people I interact with IRL.

I find myself being more open with people online, but a bit more detached. In the physical world, I'm reclusive and shy to a fault, but tend to feel more attached to the friends I make there, or at least feel some sense of obligation to maintain those relationships.

See what you've done? You're bringing out the weird over-analysis.

Stop thinking so much. If somebody tells you that you can't make friend online, or that friends you meet in person are real friends, they're plainly wrong. You get to decide what kind of relationship a friendship is.

I can attest to this... and add to it. My perception of people I know from the internet is vastly different than their actual flesh and bones incarnations. Having met Icemage and Armando in person... and spoken to Murph and Mezlo via Skype video chat... not to mention being friends with Jarre, TM and Feba on Facebook... I can say that I have not yet pegged a single one of you even remotely accurately.

This is how it it is for me the first time I meet an officer from the field. We rarely get a chance to interact with these guys. I don't usually have an idea of what someone looks like in my head, I just know that whenever I meet someone for the first time, it's never what I expect. And I won't lie, I've also been surprised by race on more than one occasion. Really trips you up when a dude with a deep, booming voice turns out to be a skinny white dude. It changed my perception on perception, if that makes any sense.

Also, I do consider this forum a collection of friends, but not any one person or set of persons individually. I don't come to the forum and think, "Hmm, let's see if Xperson is on." This forum is one big collective (and very fucking opinionated) friend. That's how I perceive it.
