Little things that make you smile - the anti-peeve thread.
Re: Little things that make you smile - the anti-peeve thread.
Hmm, I never really took the time to sit down and read Omgwtfbbqkitten's Destructoid blog because I never saw the link in the sig. But reading this entry made me smile lots.
Re: Little things that make you smile - the anti-peeve thread.
Well, it does reflect my own thoughts about watching sports. Playing sports is one thing. That can be a social event. And it has health benefits. Like hiking, which is unproductive, but is good for your health. I actually go hiking on local trails ever so often. And I find it fulfilling, even if it's really just walking which I could do around my own block.
But to this day, I still don't understand the appeal of watching sports. And claiming a team as your team. Hell, you've got people cheering for a New York team and they don't even live in New York. Perhaps it's because I really don't understand the "language" of the game. American football has a lot of rules, but if you hardly have a grasp of them, it just looks like a ball being randomly thrown around.
Gaming itself might not be productive. But as he said in his blog post, it keeps me sane and ready for the next day at work, where I am being productive. Hell, going online and playing against others competitively is probably more skill-building than watching sports on TV. At least there is a goal of getting better at it.
My only regret is I never really used it as an opportunity to make friends. So it's been a largely solitary hobby. I think I did it wrong. I knew some people from Final Fantasy XI I considered good friends, but never really reached out to meet them in person, because I mostly dismissed it as superficial because it's an online relationship. Like I said a while ago, I reflect on that and feel that was really, really stupid of me. Hey, my most meaningful friendship is with a friend from high school and he has moved to Europe. Now our friendship is more online than offline.
Wasn't so lucky at finding a gaming group in my area. Unfortunately, I don't live in a heavy urban area. I did, however, find a board game group that seems to have some pretty cool people in it. Hopefully I can commit to that.

Chalk up another one for "not getting sports".
When I was younger I followed the Orioles, but I also was playing little league baseball too. Nowadays I'm not involved in sports and thus have no urge to follow them in any way. This hasn't stopped my Dad from yammering on about every fucking sports team in D.C. every time we're in close proximity. I don't bother him with the details of every patch update to my games or new releases on the horizon that I'm really excited about because I know he will not relate at all and doesn't really care about them. I don't want to hear about your damn hockey and baseball teams, I don't want to hear about how the Redskins still suck like they do every year for the past several decades. I do not care in the slightest but I have to hear about it just the same.
Of course since being a sports junkie is socially acceptable no one calls it out on being a waste of time, but video games...Oh man you can go hog wild on that. Video games are mindless, unproductive, a waste of time and money, and a whole bunch of equally ignorant assessments.
I don't see how sitting on my ass and gaming is less valid than sitting on my ass watching a bunch of big sweaty men tackle each other while wearing tights. One is one of the most intellectually stimulating forms of entertainment available, the other is simply watching TV.
Re: Little things that make you smile - the anti-peeve thread.
I gain zero enjoyment from watching sports on TV. I derive marginal enjoyment from watching sports live. I derive a fair amount of enjoyment from participating in sports, though.
I seriously could not give a single fuck about talking about sports with people though.
