Well looks like the senate has delayed the PIPA vote. Also some good news in the Uk, a solicitor who sent letters to thousands of people demanding them to pay £500 for downloading copyrighted materials has been barred for 2 years. full storey here:- BBC News - ACS: Law solicitor Andrew Crossley suspended by SRA and Annoymnous hacked the FBI and some music industry and cinema industry websites in retaliation to megaupload being taken down. Re: SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) / Is this for real?

            TLDR version
(didnt realise it was that much text - basically I dont understand it /a little ramble and a few questions disguised as points) lol

            ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I still don't really understand it all.
I can only think of 4 things I downloaded "illegally"
Windows xp. fraps a movie editor and the film E.t.

xp because it cost more than my pc to buy. When I had to restore my computer because virtually everything I did on my computer asked me to insert my wwindows disc to repair it. It's probably not the correct way to have fixed my pc but it worked. My computer never came with a backup disc of sorts for reasons like this and every repair place I went to asked me for my windows disc so i figured I was lacking something that should of been provided in some sorts. Maybe not xp as a whole but a way for me to reset it to the "factory settings"

me getting fraps was totally wrong but i thought for a free trial 30's capture was rediculous and gave me no inclination to buy the product at all. So I dl it and a few weeks later bought the legitimate software.

The movie maker was because the windows one was too buggy probably because of my copy of xp. But I did try and find a free one but all i found were ones that watermarked my video right in the middle of what I wanted to show. but once I DL'd one and thought it was ok I purchased the correct software.

E.t i got because It's my fave film and I actually did travel all around birmingham, coventry and nuneaton looking for it but each place I went to had 0 copies and none expected to arrive because it was no longer in production. it wasnt until the 25th anniversary and they relased it again I was able to get it.

I don't like digital downloads I prefer hard copies so I know what i own actually exists. my steam account was butchered by my ex in revenge so if i played ffxi that way I'd be pretty much fked since I was unable to retrieve my account even jumping through the hoops they asked me to.

plus regional restrictions on things we're excluded from we've all been disappointed due to a game not being given release where we are "talking to you xenosaga series" in the uk if i remember correctly we don't get all of the series just the scraps like we're hungry dogs.
They don't make the old consoles or produce the games either but emulators and roms are wrong. But the interest is there but there is no other alternative to people who want to play them other than the illegal methods.
I remember when ffxi came out the person that got me into the game played on an imported ps2, We had ps2's here but no option to get the harddrive needed and that's not even safe when you think of how plug sockets worldwide vary. plus the difference in electricity.
Which makes me think about ps2 support on ffxi. how the hell are people still playing it that way? I havent seeen them for sale for years I'm 28 in a few days and the last one I bought I was 20 and people were transitioning to xbox then if I remember correctly is was all halo this halo that. I'm sure xbox was out even before then because I'm sure when I was in 6th form "stage between school & college" my friends were playing halo and a new mortal kombat had come out.

So people get penalised for making the best out of a bad situation.

I know things like Itunes and such exist but it's more jumping through hoops or getting things via the most complex ways possible.

I do think piracy is wrong but shouldnt they concentrate on the spread of child porn and beastiality contained within those sites? surely the ad spam from most piracy sites could pay some of what they make back to who they owe it to?

But again like sopa the way sites work I know nothing of apart they get money from our clicks. Some of them even charge for priority downloads. It may be cheaper but you still end up watching harry potter with people getting up to pee and hear them rustling popcorn and eating crisps. Which is no different to the cinema.

There's alot of things wrong like when people have the sound on their youtube vids disabled. Unless you profit from it whats the harm? Whats to say that person doesnt actually own that cd? Isnt it advertising the song? Do people not say "ooh i like that song" then go off to buy it? I cant see them being turned down because where they heard it was illegal.

Films being able to download before they are out on dvd is wrong in my eyes. but when you want something that isnt available and you've tried to find it legitimately and have no luck people shouldnt be punished for seeking an alternative.

You guys will probably rip me to shreds for this post because there's alot I don't understand but if you can explain where I'm confused I'll be glad to be closer to understanding a little more.

ESA pulls support for SOPA and PIPA, shrugs nonchalantly -Destructoid

                  Getting deader.

ESA finally dropped support when the gaming press and a number of studios said they wouldn't be attending E3. there was a petition that League for Gamers passed around regarding it during the day of the blackout. I signed it. E3's where the ESA gets its money to keep doing what it does, so people not supporting or refusing to acknowledge it this year would put the hurt on them.

I think it's kind of too late. The fact that they'd sign on for it in the first place is pretty damning.

Oh, it doesn't mean anything, really.

I know I've said they should pull out, but they only did after everyone else so the gesture is absolutely meaningless. They'd hop right back on to the next piece of legislation that suited their worldview.

The bill OPEN has all the proper answers and works to strengthen the DMCA, but it doesn't let corporations have everything they want. They want the power to control the flow of information - that's what they really want, OPEN won't let them do that. OPEN promotes a free market mentality. Issa has the right ideas, so they won't get behind it.
