  • SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) / Is this for real?

I want to ask people in the USA about this.

Is this really going to pass? Is people really saying nothing about it?

Some time ago I thought this had already been stopped, but turns out news about it and sites opposing it have been systematically silenced and censored to hell. Now, considering the consequences (both economic and political) I'm surprised no one has even mentioned it here.

So, either this isn't a big deal at all or people in the US really don't know anything about.

    Which one is it?

PS > As a side note, EA supports the SOPA.

So you are saying it wont pass because you've been following this? Or are you saying it wont pass because you can't even believe something like this would pass in the US but don't really know about it?

Because from comments of people following this it would appear that the amount of lobbying is getting this bill not only a strong support but also expedited passage. Not only that, but since they've already passed quite a few non-sensical laws concerning copyright in the US in the past decade I'm not that confident that "this will not pass, lol" is guaranteed.

Here's a short video about it.

I'm posting videos because they get the message across faster, but it would be a good idea to read the draft for this if you are a US citizen and haven't checked it out yet.

I'm well aware of the bill; I'm just relaying what most people say when they hear about it.

Actually, I'm surprised none of you have jumped on it. You're all usually the first to when it comes to stuff like this!

Re: SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) / Is this for real?

Its not going to pass, it presents too many issues to pass and I think even the most disconnected politicians that have lived in the Twilight Zone that is Washington DC know what horrible damage it would do. They also rely on social media to campaign, after all.

Even if it got past the House and Senate, it could be taken to the Supreme Court and it would never live past that. As much as I may not like some who reside on the bench there, it seems all of them by Scalia were keen to reject the California Video game law and SOPA has a lot of the same kind of vague definitions it had. They think by being vague they can get what they want - the justices just aren't that stupid. And if passed, this would go to the Supreme Court. They're hearing the Health Care Law next year, which does have a few constitutional issues itself.

I mean, were SOPA to be enacted as its so loosely define, DiV would be shut down for all the My Little Pony images posted on it and any other site that did, which in turn might damage their ability to advertise their products on those other sites. Destructoid, Kotaku, Joystiq, Youtube, Twitter, Facebook and all that would be wiped from the internet. And what would happen then? Advertisers would lose sites to advertise on, lose exposure and we'd have an internet as shitty TV is now.

Mattel owns my Little Pony and Transformers - I think they'd like to have sites like Joystiq or Destructoid around to get the word out and have ads for Transformers games and all that. Those sell, you know.

I think a lot of companies signed on not knowing what SOPA was really about. I find myself puzzled that Nintendo is on it, but Sony being on it doesn't really surprise me, though in light of the social networking elements Uncharted 3 has for its multiplayer it is a bit puzzling as well. Microsoft signed on, but backed out and its a good thing they did because we need a big name like that backing out so its noticed. MS wants to get into the social media big time and supporting SOPA flies in the face of that.

And really, how would they prosecute people that used copyrighted materials anyway? Everyone on the internet has appropriated and used copyrighted material to one end or another. Are they going to take us all to court? There's just so much waste and frivolous nonsense this would fill the courts with.

Its not going to pass and if it does, it won't make it past the Supreme Court. Its really that simple. Its not like this ends with the House and Senate voting on it,

I really hope you are right.

The consequences of giving these corporations such power over the internet is pretty scary.

Wikipedia has a surprisingly solid overview of the current state of SOPA.

Stop Online Piracy Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Whether the legislation passes or not, it simply will not survive a legal challenge, and the array of companies which would be affected by it is both large, wealthy, and powerful enough to ensure that it happens if for some reason our idiotic legislators don't realize this on their own.

SOPA is really just taking a company like Sony's - as a whole, not just one division here - historical copyright paranoia to hideous extremes.

What really needs to happen is a redefinition of what copyright, license and public domain mean in the internet age and the rights of creators and licensees need to be weighed equally.

Its self defeating to go hunt down the very people that may honestly be your advocate. Its like when Paramount would shut down a Star Trek fansite or Square Enix shuts down a fan remake of Chrono Trigger. Nothing productive comes of it aside from damaged faith in your brands, really.

Not that it matters, but Hasbro, actually. Mattel's biggest names as far as I know are Barbie and Hot Wheels.

I'm still reeling from when they C&D'd Chrono Resurrection, and that was 7 years ago.

So it's likely to pass but then would be killed through lawsuits?

I guess I'll never understand how things work over there.

When you have groups such as Anonymous and Lulzseck around I doubt Pirating is the last thing our nation is worried about, they will never stop pirating. Just like they will never stop Porn/Rape/Outlaw Guns/etc etc. This is just going to aggrevate the public into a cyber revolt against our goverment as we know it. This act will never pass and quite frankly, people have been pirating for years. If they're going to even do it, they'd need to start with movies, since that's the HEAVIEST piracy I've ever seen in my life.

Seems those in Hollywood's pocket are more than eager to pass it.

Destructoid just announced - as many other sites have - that they will be severing all ties with GoDaddy and will be seeking to do business elsewhere. Good on all of them, I say.

If SOPA does pass, its going to set a record for swiftest kick in the ass when it makes it to the Supreme Court.
