BBC News - Live: UK riots

I've, no idea if any non UK forum members have heard about what is going on, but basically there have been a large series of riots across the UK during the weekend and there is no sign of them letting up any time soon.

It is happening where I am and I'm sure there are a couple of people here who do live in the riot effected cities so I'm mostly posting this out of concern for those to see if they are alright.

Someone did Tweet this image found on a door on a Subway in Manchester, which was amusing.

But being serious, the riots began due to the police gunning down a black man. The police claimed that he was a gang member and was armed though the inquiry proved that he was unarmed. His family organised a protest and it was hijacked, by people there to cause trouble. Relations between the police and the public have been on a fine edge for a while so riots like this kicking off were inevitable.

Basically the rioting is mostly in areas with high unemployment and deprivation. I don't endorse or condone violence in any way but some of the rioters so have legitimate grievances. It still doesn't excuse their behaviour.

It's also hard to sympathise with the police here too since they have a horrible track record of dealing with riots, and as the riots back in November showed, the police in the UK more often than not they do more harm than good. They tend to do things that just provokes or encourages more violence.

As one example, in Manchester right now, all they do is set up a perimeter around the riot area and...Do nothing. Basically inside the cordon the rioters are free to do what they like and outside of it, people are stuck and unable to get home or even move.

The rioting in my home town was mostly limited to looting in the City Centre though nobody really knows if its was just a one off event or if it might escalate due to the entire UK police force pretty much being shifted to London.

Then again Londoners don't give a shit about the rest of the UK, or the rest of the world for that matter as long as their little bubble is fine.

And Icemage that behaviour is pretty much standard procedure in London. it's pretty much the Mos Eisley of Europe. Last time I was there I was stopped and searched by the Police five times and on not one of those occasions did they even say why (and that is just the police). One of the Officers actually threatened to arrest me for taking out my earphones so I could hear him properly. The people tend to be either the type who are too pretentious to even notice anyone else around them or the type that will notice you and will probably mug you the second you take a wrong turn. To sum up, if you ever visit the UK, stay the fuck away from London. If you do go there, for the love of god stay in the tourist areas.

The past couple of days have been a nightmare, I've patched up so many of them who really don't deserve my care.
Whats worse myself and other nurses have been attacked. I'm in birmingham, The scum kicked off mainly last night right near our specialised Childrens Hospital. They have no respect whatsoever. All shops are closing early too it's a nightmare working shifts so Im almost panic buying stuff that I need.

The scum when caught should have their benefits forfeight for life. If you're perfectly well to riot and loot, Your more than capable of getting a job. There is jobs here it's just they want the most money for the least work which is why they fiddle the system and sit on their ass. I should know I did it myself once "lol depression"
These people are the first to come down on the polish and nigerians for doing work but I bet they wont get out of bed to scrub toilets or offer me aftershave when I've been for a piss. Especially not for minimum wage.

They're just Dirty, Lazy, Greedy B*st*rds.

Well the majority or them are the unemployed and kids on the school holidays.
100% of the one's I've treated so far have no occupation. Their medical files say they are on incapacity benefit with almost crippling back pain. Yet they were capable of getting up to all this.

I bet half of them couldnt give a toss about the guy that was shot. They're just pure scum.
There is no excuse for what they are doing.
Innocent people who are struggling just like them are being brutalised, The only difference is they are working trying to earn a living in the shops being looted. Being threatened and beaten.

I like how the arabic countries deal with theft. Lets see them carry a flatscreen tv with no hands.
No matter how many they catch it wont be long till they are on the streets, That is if they ever do time at all.
Our prisons are a bit on the full side as it is.

I can not stand stupid stuff like this..... riots are an excuse to rob and hurt others, and I am the kind to not put up with bullshit.... I know this is the Texan in me talking.....but I would make it to my own home, no matter how many rioters tried to stop me..... noone gets in my way of me and my home. I am nice and go with the flow when things are nice....but rub the the wrong way and I turn into Texan-shotgun-man ^.^

I explained it in my second post. Basically the UK is going to be the next European country down the pan:

Then when that riot was going on, people in areas of high unemployment and deprivation started to join in the riots. Basically if you live in an area like my hometown and the only career you can look forwards to after leaving school is working in a call centre for less than minumum wage for your entire life no matter how well you do, with no prospect of being able to go to University thanks to the government tripling university tuition, people are understandably very frustrated. The Police, busy suppressing what was originally a peaceful protest that how then blown up in their face, would not have been around to prevent any further riots.

People are also incredibly frustrated with the police and how incompetent they have been over the last few years. It also doesn't help how heavy handed they are in dealing with people. As I said in my second post, I was stopped and searched five times on my last visit to London with no explanation and only threats of arrest and a forced search at the station if I asked why. November's riots are a great example of when heavy handed police tactics turn a peaceful student protest into a riot across the capital because of essentially how much the police pissed off the peaceful protesters.

The Government hasn't helped either considering that anti-government protesters are always bastardised by them and by the media no matter what the cause. The Government always come down ridiculously hard on protests against them. It's clear that the Government doesn't give a shit about peaceful protest and they are the first to complain when they keep provoking and provoking a large mob of angry people and the inevitable happens. it's hard to support violence but what other option to protesters have if the Government suppresses peaceful protest as they do now?

The current riots, they started out with people with very good reasons to be angry. Now they have pretty much degenerated into people looting just because they can really. What makes it even more stupid is that the Government diverted most of the UK's Police Forces to London when the riots had moved elsewhere. Brilliant move by the Government there. Well done Mr Cameron, you cut police funding, shove austerity measures down the throats of people who already have little prospects in life unless they were born into money, then divert all of the UK's major Police Forces to the captial three days after the riots started because you were too busy tossing off on holiday. And now you're bitching when the inevitable happens...

Well done to the looters too, you just fucked over any chance of the Government considering listening to peaceful anti-government protests or considering not treating protesters like some kind of armed militia.
