No, your average man on the street was being fed lines about Obama wanting to interfere with their health care directly; they didn't give a shit about whether the federal government should be allowed to wonk with health care in general. Most Americans are like that-- If politics won't effect them, they care very little. This is why the anti-gay squad has to reframe it as an issue of "harming traditional marriage" and "Teaching our kids to be gay". Ask the average American about MANY of Obama's (and for that matter, Bush) policies, but don't mention who came up with them or their official titles, and people will largely support them. Do you support the federal government regulating health care insurance costs, making sure providers must cover anyone at a reasonable price, and providing for those who have financial difficulties? Sure! Obamaca? BOO NO SOCIALISM.
A big reason Obama is so much more susceptible than this than his predecessors is racism. Of course, people in the know can object for different reasons, but that's not where their support is coming from.
