Re: Food dyes are bad! (Poison)

High Fructose Corn Syrup is sugar I thought....
Nope, it's a substitute, and it's goddamned everywhere. Even in things you wouldn't expect, like ketchup and spaghetti sauces. If it'll save them a couple of pennies, there's nothing they won't put HFCS on. Juices are the worst offender. It's easy to find drinks that claim to have real juice but you check the side and it's got 2% juice, the rest is water and HFCS.

Incidentally, a friend of mine has family in the Dominican Republic and tells me that coke over there is made with cane sugar and not HFCS. He tells me it tastes fucking awesome.

No it isn't. Its synthetic. And how its made is really bad for the environment as well. If I can find the article, I'll link it.

Mountain Dew occasionally releases their soda sweetened with cane sugar.

The problem with HFCS is that its molecular bonds are so weak that you're hardly putting any energy into breaking them apart while digesting them. Most vegetables, for example, require about the same amount of energy to digest them as you're going to receive from them. Sugars are known for producing more energy than it takes it digest them, of course, but HFCS takes it so far and is so pervasive that it could fatten you up quite easily.

Yea, just about everything can give you cancer, the sun (Which some people are claiming that its actually good for your skin, and that it helps if you get so much a day, depending on how dark you are.), cigarettes (Which is true.), even using the computer, and living near power lines.

Most of the stuff that give you cancer is mostly speculation though.

You two realize there's a difference between being near equipment that uses electromagnetic waves for communication and devices that simply use electricity for power...right?

It must be an American thing since I don't think I had ever seen High Fructose Corn Syrup in stuff until I visited Florida. While not banned, Synthetic sweeteners are hardly ever used (except maybe at really bad take outs) over here. We instead just use copious amounts of cane sugar or glucose (pretty much the same thing as cane sugar) to get the same effect (and almost certainly the same health risks).

In the Uk papers there is always something about some sort of food is bad for you. if you were to historically look into this you will probably find that all food and drink is bad for you in some way. so what are you going to do, starve and make yourself thirsty? You only live once and our bodies are amazing at sorting out what's good and what's bad. eat something that doesn't agree with you, your body evacuates it from the nearest orifice to keep you safe.

I find all this scaremongering amusing. Live life, eat what you want and ignore those pricks who say this is abd for you then when you look into it you find it made ill 10 people out of a million.

The cost of sugar in the US is artificially inflated and the cost of corn artificially deflated making bottling companies choose HFCS instead of 'real' sugar for most things on cost reasons.

Ok, no its not. Glucose is a monosaccharide, like Fructose is. Glucose is as simple a molecule as you get while still being a sugar and is directly metabolized by the body. Sugar, the actual ingredient, the white stuff you buy in a bag, is sucrose, a disaccharide comprised of 2 simple sugars, glucose and fructose and has to be broken down (by sucrase) into its component monosaccharides to be metabolized.

Cane Sugar is by and large a marketing thing because it is not the primary source of sugar (that would be vegetables like sugar beets for industrial uses) but looks very good to say 'we're made with real sugar'. Jones Soda in the US flaunts its use of Real Cane sugar while the Throwback products from Pepsi simply say sugar, probably sourced from much cheaper beet sugar.
