I actually spent some time googling it. Found a few separate places that all say we call it football because it's played on your feet. Sports for commoners were played on your feet while aristocrats usually played sports on horseback.
I imagine that's why we refer to it now as the working man's sport or something like that.

That's actually pretty cool, and something I did not know.

Last year's (2012) WoW Winter Veil (Christmas) vanity item was two balls that you can toss back and forth to other players, The Pigskin and Foot Ball, which awarded the Feat of Strength They're Both Footballs? which I thought was pretty cool. Acknowledging that football is a confusing term to many if you don't specify.

Really not even sure where the hell the term Soccer came from - Football makes a hell of a lot more sense seeing as you primarily play with your feet vs holding the ball in your arms like in American Football.

Armando: Loved that it listed New Mexico as a Spanish speaking state.

Armando and Mal: It came from Association Football. Originally shortened to Assoc as a slang term, then soccer. Was originally used by the upper class to refer to English football. Was the middle and lower classes that took to calling it football.

Primarily, if I'm talking about soccer I do call it futbol, while I just pronounce American football as "football."

Problem with trying to change that even though pretty much the whole world refers to soccer as football, is you have a fuckload of ignorant xenophobes in this country who would say shit like, "CHANGING THE NAME OF FOOTBALL IS UN'MERICAN. THIS IS 'MERICA. FOOTBALL IS 'MERICAN." :/

And to this day, I still don't understand why we don't have a big futbol following in the States. We're not terrible at it (not amazing either, but not terrible) and it's just as athletic as any other sport we watch religiously as a nation.

I can watch it occasionally. Can be hard for it to keep my attention, though. Which is odd since I love watching baseball, but that probably has a lot to do with me just understanding baseball more, particularly the pitcher/batter/catcher dynamic.
That and I just get tired watching them sprint non-stop up and down the pitch (see, I know things!). That shit just isn't natural.

I was actually randomly thinking about this the other day. Would you get rid of it only for cash purposes? Or force all businesses to only charge prices that would round to multiple of 5's with tax? The sales tax thing makes it shaky, too. If you stack multiple items you can end up with a difference of a penny in taxes depending on if you bought them all at once of in several distinct purchases. You'd really have to just round everything up or down to the nearest 5. Which while rounding up probably wouldn't be noticeable for consumers, it could very well have a pretty big impact on bigger businesses. Personally, I'd be fine with getting rid of the penny. Would be a lot less change for me to have to keep up with and stockpile until I can get it to the bank and cashed out.

The rounding would go either way roughly half the time. Even if not, they're not worth the lost time and the fact that they literally cost more to produce than their monetary value. Also, the US has literally done this before, as have other countries. It's no biggie.

Although I don't really mind them that much, plus sales tax would have to go down to 5% (unlikely) or up to 10% (more likely) (fucking politicians), and I'm not cool with a 3% increase in the cost of all goods.

It's short for Association Football. "Soccer" is actually a term that comes from the UK, like "Rugger" being short for "Rugby Football".

It's why you see team names with AFC in them. it's short of Association Football Club (Or RFC in Rugby Team names).
