Here's a MAJOR difference, "In rugby union, it is against the rules to throw (pass) the ball in a forward direction: a player in a position to receive such a pass would in most cases be offside anyway." The NFL is a passing league with quarterbacks amassing the majority of the offense throwing for 5000+ yards a season. Rugby players through for 0 yards a season or get penalized.

Really the fact that we call it football is pretty retarded since there's only three situations which require the use of the foot in contact with the ball, but this argument is never going to have any sort of resolution regardless.

I actually spent some time googling it. Found a few separate places that all say we call it football because it's played on your feet. Sports for commoners were played on your feet while aristocrats usually played sports on horseback.
I imagine that's why we refer to it now as the working man's sport or something like that.

So yeah. I don't know what's the story behind the word "soccer" but it's pretty clear pretty much the whole world and most of America prefers to call it football.
