Re: Official Bored at Work / Off-Topic Chat Thread II
I played the 3DS game. It's Ok. It depends one what type of Act you're playing. Each of the zones is divided into 4 acts: 3 action stages and 1 boss fight. Boss fights in the Sonic series have always been kind of cheap and cheesy so nothing special there. The first 3 zones fall into 3 categories: 3-D Sonic platforming, 2-D Sonic, and 1 "gimmicky" act.
The game is usually at its best during the 3-D platforming levels where the emphasis is on forward momentum. You know how the standard Sonic game goes. You are running through a huge obstacle course where the fun is in skillfully navigating from one challenge to the next. And if you do it a particular way, you usually end up on a shorter (but often more difficult) route.
If you've played the DIMPS handheld Sonic games, you pretty much know what to expect from the 2-D levels. Lots and lots of wall-climbing. Often, the goal is to jump at the right moments to get to higher ground.
And last, there are the gimmicky stages which try way too hard to be like Super Mario games with more emphasis on puzzle solving. Hardly any of it uses Sonic's skillset.
