Well, just to do a sanity check, an x^2 - 1 function is going to look like a U centered around the y-axis. The point has a positive x value, so it's on the right side of the U, and its decreasing, so moving towards the center. Following the curve, we can see that y is decreasing moving in that direction, so whatever value we get will be negative. And knowing something about the square function, for values x>1, the graph moves much more vertically than horizontally, so whatever value we get for the y movement will be greater than what we have for the x.

What I did was take the derivative of the function so I could find the slope of the line at (2,3). Derivative of x^2 is 2x, plugging in the x value of our point tells us that the slope of the tangent there is 2(2) = 4. Slope equals delta y over delta x, so delta y equals slope times delta x, which is 4(-2), so -8.

I don't know how to properly notate that as a progression of equations, and I'm mixing algebra terms and calculus ones, but I believe that that is correct.

I hate calculus... Ugh. I'll try your answer and see what happens. xD Thanks! :D

Ugh sums up calculus pretty well.

And that is precisely why I don't want to be a math teacher. I do well enough in math classes, but ... what's the point?

So all 100 people that applies to, what are the rest of us going to do with it?

And yes, I am being facetious. But in most professions, skills like calculus are absolutely useless. I love knowledge, and I plan to teach, but I want to teach something I will enjoy and that the kids will enjoy. Math is not one of those things.

How do you think people make all your damn video games? That shit is math intensive like you wouldn't believe and that industry is goddamn enormous.

You have a Credit Card right? Well the companies use calculus to set the minimum payments due on credit card statements at the exact time the statement is processed by considering multiple variables such as changing interest rates and a fluctuating available balance.

Engineers, Architects and Statisticians also use it, then you have Physicists and even 3D Graphic Artists. You're also using it while driving to work and back without realising it.

Also if you were in the Military you should know that it is used constantly in firing solutions for artillery and fire support as well as by snipers.

Heck, even Doctors and Lawyers use Calculus.

I'll be honest, 15 years in the workforce and I can't remember ever using calculus (and yes, that includes the military, being female as you all are aware I didn't get to really do anything cool). Great that it's used elsewhere! I just don't care to know it or teach it. I am allowed to decide what I do and do not want to learn, yes?

And this is just another reason for me to believe that credit card companies are evil, honestly. Though I remember calculating balances when I worked at a telemarketing firm in like 2000, figured that was more algebra than anything else - if that was calculus then I stand corrected, I have used it. I just like my math with numbers please.

We're just giving you a hard time because we all know that you know that math is extremely important even if most people aren't required to use it on a daily basis.

Seriously, you're on a forum with a bunch of people who did number crunching for FFXI and going off about math not being important and expecting to not get shit for that? Come on Aks, you knew this was gonna happen.

In retrospect, I should have, but I blame work turning me into a mindless zombie.

Also, I really don't want to teach math, even if I'd get a job really easily.

As an architect, I don't use calculus most I use is general sums, area and volume calculations and my pet hate triganometry for roof angles.
