Re: Official Bored at Work / Off-Topic Chat Thread II
I had Mexican in me. A few times. (Not that it's something to brag about...)
I get marketing calls in Spanish all the time. Yes, my name is Spanish. Unlucky twist of fate for me to have a Spanish first name and marry a Mexican. But people should stop assuming. I guess the fact that I live in Florida doesn't help matters.
Re: Official Bored at Work / Off-Topic Chat Thread II
my birth (sur)name was Spanish; I was very adamant about rejecting companies who sent me products in Spanish on the basis of my name alone. It's more than a little bit racist.
To this day, that's why I buy shick razors over gillette. And that after they sent me a free kit of stuff.
Do the same thing to this day; although it's when I get spoken to in English because I'm white, despite there being plenty of white people here who don't speak English, and the fact that their English is almost always far worse than my Chinese. Plus a lot of the people here who speak fluent English are ABCs, so they look native, and get spoken to in Chinese... racist any way you slice it. Judging someone's linguistic ability based on outward appearance is hardly any less racist than, say, assuming that someone enjoys hip-hop because they're black, or does manual labor. because they're latino. Language is a (huge) part of culture, and when you make assumptions about someone's linguistic ability, you're assuming where they fall into society; not to mention, in the case of immigrants, the assumption that they're "not one of us", speaking to them in anything but the local language is a way of pushing them out of your group.

All very true.
Funny thing is, if any of these people actually saw me they wouldn't think I'm Spanish at all, they judge me entirely by my name. It's part of the reason I use my middle name on most documents since the middle name is American and it helps dispel things.
I'm sure the people who live here and don't speak English are grateful when they get calls in Spanish but to me, it's kind of insulting. Even though I pretty much do speak some semblance of Spanish.

"DIE! DIE, WHY CAN'T I HIT SOMETHING RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME?"
MY SIDES. XD
(This an April Fool's entry in the middle of an otherwise unrelated LP series of a game titled Touhou Mother, which is exactly what it sounds like and then some. Just, so, y'know, you aren't confused to what he's rambling about.)
