Well yeah, but there's also plenty of long blocks of awkward silence during the day. That's fine on a forum, but in real life it's, well...awkward.

I dunno. I feel like the relationships I have with people online tend to be different from the ones I have with people in real life. It's not something I've given a lot of thought to, but it's always there in the back of my mind.

I don't make/keep friends very well. I have a best friend I've known for a while, and two ex-girlfriends that I'm still on great terms with. I also have a very supportive mother and family. I know this isn't a huge amount of people, but between them all there isn't a conversation I can't have or a single thing I can't get off my chest. Sometimes I think I can trust other people, but the cautious side of me always plays the wait and see card to prevent myself from opening up too much, too soon.

In all seriousness though, I tend to agree with Cid. IRL I have roughly... 3 friends who I'm actually close with and my wife. It's not that I don't want more friends... it's just a hassle to try and juggle that many people, married and working full time. I lost touch with every single person I went to College with... and almost everyone I was in High School with as well.

Online friendships work out for me better than RL ones. If that evolves into something more personal than the anonymity of a forum, bonus.

Take for example Murph and TM. My friendships with them started here on the forum, moved to the game, then Skype and now onto Facebook.

To my wife and some of my friends IRL, it's weird that I would reach out to people I "don't even know" as friends, but when you come to a forum like this and meet people with a foundation of interests very similar to yours, it's only natural to bond with them and eventually become friends.

I probably know more about most of you guys than I do about my friends here... just because of how often our conversations breach the personal level.

Scheduling times to hang out with my friends here is arduous... and usually ends in last minute cancellations. Here, I can strike up a conversation with anyone at virtually any time. It just works out better.

Yeah, online friends work better. Specially forum and BBS ones.

You can reply at any time and there's always an interesting comment or two waiting for you when you get back from work. Not to mention you aren't forced to actually interact with them unless you want to.

I don't notice a difference between my online relationships and my real-life relationships anymore because I don't have any of the latter. The vestigial relationships from the time in my life where I physically mingled with other people have all converted to online relationships, due mostly to others moving and now living hours away from me. I had little to no common culture with anyone at my last job, so relationships ended at whistle time, and now as a stay-at-home parent I meet no new people whatsoever. I don't say this as a boo-hoo thing because I recognize the absence only in a sortof detached academic sense, the same way I recognize there should probably be more physical activity in my life, but it does probably go toward those moments where I profoundly overshare in a public place, because I don't really have a proper relationship to vent those kinds of thoughts. So the next time you read one of my posts that makes you think "Oh God, why is he saying this," congratulations. You just became a victim of my stunted social life.

I have a core group of 5 real life "real" friends here in Puerto Rico. I'm going to move to the states at some point before the end of the year. It saddens me, but these are the sort of people I know I can not see for half a year, then come back and we'll hang out like I never left. I suspect we'll be doing a lot of Borderlands and DOTA2 and TF2 while I'm away.
