Mine started acting up around age 22. I went to physical therapy, and even met with a neurologist. He wanted to do back surgery. I freaked out and told him I'd live with it.

I probably would have freaked out too.

My only advice I can give is to not give in to a chiropractor. Sure, you'll feel better for a day or 2... but then that shit gets addicting. Nothing they do actually fixes anything. It's all temporary.

First... we take this pointy spike of doom (legitimate medical terminology) and ram it up into your 3rd vertebrae. Wait! Where are you going?!

Yeah, I need a long term solution. I've heard too many mixed reviews of chiropractors. I'm a bit surprised to hear you guys have similar problems. Terrible back pain is the sort of thing you think you won't have to deal with until you're old and can wield a cane while calling kids whippersnappers.

The worst part of this whole thing for me is that it's like the carpal tunnel syndrome scare all over again. Both my job and my hobby have me in the same position: sitting in front of a computer. If that's inducing health problems that require me to not be in that position I've lost both my income and my leisure activity, which puts me in a very dark place that I prefer not to visit. It's scary.

The only thing keeping me remotely functional at the moment is a generous dose of painkillers, but that's only for another week or so. If things are still getting worse when I have to go off them I don't know what I'll do. This thing has me scared and the fear is all-consuming.

              I'm not surprised. After all:

Honestly, Cid. I think talking to a doctor and possibly doing some physical therapy could help. But I do understand. At the time I was working at a white collar job that required me to be in a chair most of the day. Occasionally it required that I lift heavy boxes. Both were a challenge with my back. Muscle relaxers go a long way, at least for me. I don't know your specific issue so I can't actually make many suggestions, but a doctor would point you in the right direction.

I suppose that makes sense. I just don't hear about it happening to many folks my age.

It happens more often than you think. I thought the same thing when I went to my doctor. Especially now in our more sedentary society. One key factor, from what I understand is having a strong core. So strong abdominal muscles and very little extra weight around the midsection. Now, I have no idea how you're built, but I know for me, once I started working a desk job, in addition to sitting most of the time, I was also putting a few pounds on. So that had a definite adverse effect. To be honest, it's something I still work at.

This is the part where I mention I'm the most sedentary guy there is and have zero back problems. /brag

A good posture and lifting technique go a very long way towards making you impervious to most back injuries.

                      PS > Also remember that if it hurts there is a reason for it, so stop moving and let your body heal itself. Painkillers only cover the problem and allow you to hurt yourself further because you aren't feeling the warning signs. <_<;

PPS > For lifting techniques there's nothing better than going to the heavy lifting section of a Gym. Once you actually learn to lift with your legs while having your back straight you'll be able to lift heavier things with ease and without risking an injury.

You guys don't go to the gym? I have the same poor habits but some semi regular weight training does wonders. Maybe give that a shot. It's gonna suck early on, but as you strengthen, it gets way way better.

I do go to the gym. I was talking about when I was 22 and the problems developed. That was a good 12 years ago.

So yeah, one of my trainees quit today, the male trainee, the one who was "hunting and pecking" for keys. He sounded better on the radio but he was awful at typing. No loss.

The other trainee has shown a lot of improvement. Maybe she just needed the one-on-one time with me. Her typing is still slow but at least she knows how to type without looking at her keyboard. After that, it's just practice which will get her where she needs to be. She needs more work on radio speaking and all that but damn, what a difference a day makes, because I was ready to give up on the lot of them and say fuck it, I'll work seven days a week until we find people who don't suck. (I still would, btw, I'd rather wear myself out than hire people who aren't cut out for it.)

It does kind of annoy me that I wasted my time with this guy though, he had another job offer come to him and I don't blame him for taking it knowing full well that he wasn't right for this position but dude, our training isn't just this one day "here you go sit down and file these papers" training process, it's a two week extensive program. I just feel like I wasted my time even bothering with someone who didn't want the actual job. He should have just held out for another job or worked for a temp agency if he didn't have any intention of staying that long. Oh well. He wasn't going to pass either way, but if I'm going to train someone up, I want them to want to work with us, whether they're cut out for it or not.

I suffer many back problems due to a crushed disk in my spine, though I put on a brave face and you wouldn't know if you passed me walking on the street. weight around the middle I do have issues getting off as my spine does reduce what I can do, but i can tell you it does affect your spine the more you have. I am normally in and out of physio at least twice a year and see a consultant at least 1 every 2 years, today I've been to the doc to get my bi-annual consultant appointment and MRI scan.

As for cid, whats your chair like? does it have a decent back, maybe a lumber roll would help, do you get out of your chair and have a stretch, walk to make a drink every hour / hour and half as that helps. Do you get exercise every day even if its a 15 minute walk or something not to strenerous but it gets you moving.

Murphie they told me surgery would help with a fusion but they would have to repeat it every 15 years as it will spread up my spine and I'm not worth the expenditure till I'm 60. So I live day to day with the pain 24/7 and just have to work with it for what I can and can't do.

I would agree with Yyg, see your Dr to get to see a consultant, they need to x-ray or MRI scan to see if theirs anything out of the ordinary and ask your Dr to refer you to physiotherapy and tell them everything (thats important) any shooting pains, numbness, pins and needles, write a diary of what you do each day how long your sat down for, what exercise you do etc.
