Happy New Year! My router already broke, 2 car accidents happened on my street, I nearly got run off the road by a drunk driver on my way to purchasing a new router, and dinner started on fire! It's going to be an awesome year! XD

Might be going to Osaka at the end of Feb. Really hope I can work things out.

Also would be bringing girlfriend with. I have to say, I get a kick out of most westerners accusing me of falling somewhere between Japanophile and Weeaboo, orientals (for lack of a less offensive geographic description) referring to me as "more or less Japanese" only slightly ironically (I actually had a Japanese* classmate turn to me the other day and ask me a question about Japan, since he didn't know), and personally noticing that while I never felt homesick in Japan, I felt homesick in Taiwan... but for Japan, not the states. (I'm from Kansas, so fuck home) The flipside of this, of course, is that my best friend (met on FFXI many years ago) and girlfriend both have opinions on Japan ranging from "It's kinda ok I guess" to "fucking weeaboos, fuck off, I mean shit, it's fucking Japan, they're just fucked up and you eat their shit like it's chocolate cake.".

She knows all of six or seven phrases in Japanese (Konnichiha, Arigatou, Honto ni, Wakannai, Itadakimasu, and other random odds and ends; half of which I've taught her),
though, so I am really looking forward the inevitable result of going with her: wherever we go, service staff will turn to her, speak in Japanese, and she will have no idea what they are saying. The white guy will then reply to them, in Japanese. They will continue attempting to speak to her, and confirm things with her, only to continue to have the white guy speak to them.

I've had this happen before in Taiwan, when I go to shops with Japanese friends, and translate for them. The looks on peoples faces when their follow Asian isn't a native is priceless.



*for context's sake, his parents are Taiwanese, he lived in Japan for the first 16-17 years of his life; subsequently spending 6+ years in NZ. He's more Japanese than anything else, in any case.
